Hey guys i referred to this forum to ask a question about my alienware.

Battlefield 3 is going to be coming out in a few months and my question is about my laptop's ability to run the game smoothly.

My current system: Alienware M17x R2

    CPU: Intel i5 M540; 2.53GHz
Graphic: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 (2x)
    Operating System: Windows 7 64-bit
    Ram: 8.00GB
    Memory: 500GB dedicated ; 500GB RAID

    BF3 Requirements:

    Minimum System Requirements
    Processor: Dual Core
    Memory: 2 GB
Hard Drive: 15 GB for Digital Version, 10 GB for Disc Version
    Video Memory: 256 MB
    Sound Card: DirectX Compatible
    DirectX: 10
    Keyboard and Mouse
    DVD Rom Drive

    Recommended System Requirements
    Processor: Quadcore Processor
    Memory: 4 GB
Hard Drive: 15 GB for Digital Version, 10 GB for Disc Version
    Video Memory: 512 MB
    Sound Card: DirectX Compatible
    DirectX: 11
    Keyboard and Mouse
    DVD Rom Drive

Also: I've been playing Battlefield Bad Company 2, and i've been having a problem when i load new matches it takes like 20 seconds for it to load the map like the FPS is running lowing at the beginning i thought this is the ram but its still doing it. Any possible solution to this problem? just want my system optimal before the release

    Thank you in advance :D

u will be able to play it at MAX setting on 1600p

although it looks like your cpu might be a bottleneck. if u want future proof, u should REALLY go for a quad core... even a i7 720qm should be much better

Arent the motherboards the same for the R2 dual core and R2 quad core?

The same layout I mean, so you can buy a R2 quad core motherboard and replace it withe the R2 dual core you got now.

Read that somewhere on the forum, cant remember where.

like the game loads up quick

but when you click start match the sandbox takes like 10 sec to load. I mean i've heard people say that this is a regular occurrence on this game and not to worry about it, because it is a console game made for PC, resulting in poor memory MPG i mean the game uses like 96% of my system CPU to run lol.

I mean you think i would have to worry about this with BF3? what are your thoughts, seeing it's PC first.

also my max res is 1400X900

I hope you mean play it on low settings. If so you will probably get 20-30 fps, I wouldn't expect more. That's my guess.

    Hey Dreadnaught,

Bad Company 2 used to lag for 20 seconds for me as well.. then I went from a T9600 to a QX9300 and BAM problem solved.. turns out the Core 2 Duo was a bottleneck in alot of games. Both the Duo and Quad were/are running at 2.8ghz.

Long story short, DEATH TO DUAL CORES, LONG LIVE THE QUADS!!! > :D

(Hex-cores?? pfft when will anything use more than 4 cores?? TIC :p)

Well, seeing as the 360 will be running it, you can be pretty sure all midrange hardware will run it with no problems. My guess is it can scale very well, ranging from mediocre graphics to incredible graphics seeing as it's running on consoles.

"u will be able to play it at MAX setting on 1600p"

No, you will definitely NOT be able to run it at max settings. Dice (the developers) have clearly stated that there is no PC out right now which can run it on the highest settings smoothly. At their demos, they're using a desktop GTX580 which is able to run it well on high settings.

    "How bout BF3 on the R3 (2720qm, 4gb ram, 6970, 1080p screen)?"

You should be able to run it on pretty high settings based on the performance stats on PassMark website.

Check your video driver as well. BFBC2 used to have very long load times until AMD released a driver that corrected this. If you are using the old Dell or AMD drivers, you may have this problem.

As far as how well you will be able to play BF3, I would think that max resolution and medium to high settings should get you 60FPS. Keeping the advanced options like AA turned off will help you get to 60. At least that is what I'm hoping, being in the same boat as you.

You guys are missing the point with the whole Xbox thing though. It's a different game. Xbox: 24 players. PC: 64 players. The console version is very likely running at a slightly sub-720p resolution, no AA, and with more like medium quality level textures. Further, Bad Co. 2 on Xbox didn't run at 60 FPS.

The alpha for BF3 runs okay on my m17x. But it is an alpha, so that situation could change. My understanding is a lot of people are getting mediocre FPS on a lot of systems, so it's not likely just this laptop.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...ut-play-battlefield-3-alpha-beta-my-m18x.html

these threads have been covering the Alpha game play and Skygunner has tested the game out with dual and single 6970's and dual and single 580's and he has gotten 46-50 FPS on the single 6970 and 56+ on a single 580. Crossfire is not working well at all @ the moment. In one thread someone with a 720qm and a single 5870m was getting around 40-50FPS as well. People with 560m, and a 260M have been getting around 25-30FPS. These settings are at 1920 x1080 and High for all of them.

Yeh, dual core can't even run BC2!

As far as hex-cores go, the new sandy bridge's smoke even the best AMD hex-core processors.
