I keep getting a BSOD while gaming only.

Can anyone understand this at all?

    Thanks in advance.

So after some google search looks like 116 is video card drivers possibly. So I uninstalled the nvidia and intel ones and am using the dell stock ones from the website....lets see if this works....hmmm

This is an Alienware M17X R3 with 580GTX btw.

    Damn got it again.

Which video drivers are you using?

Also, download and run WhoCrashed. http://www.resplendence.com/whocrashed/. Click on Analyze and then scroll down for results. It examines the same dump file data as the Bluescreen utility, but reports the results in a more user friendly manner, sometimes suggesting areas for further research.

    Thanks, will download it now!

Google query: nvlddmkm.sys NVIDIA Corporation VIDEO_TDR_ERROR

I have tried several nvidia drivers and the dell ones with constant bsod, any suggestions? Thanks.

    Hi DemiseAngel,

    1. Try a clean start.
    2. Uninstall the graphics cards drivers again (integrated and discrete).
    3. Run driver sweeper. On driver sweeper select Nvidia Physics and Nvidia Display, analyse and clean them both (I recommend that you run this program on safe mode).
    4. Re install the drivers.
    5. Check if your Video card has a firmware update and run it.
    6. Update the system's BIOS.
    7. Change the Virtual Memory from Automatically Manage by Windows to Manually Set. We recommend setting the Virtual Memory with a Minimum of 2048MB and a Maximum of 4096MB. For How to change the virtual memory, click here.
    3. Restart the system, press F12 several times on the Alienhead logo to go to the boot options. Select PSA, ePSA or Diagnostics. Check any error codes here.

All good stuff to try from Natalia.

FYI you are probably suffering a TDR error but before it can recover the blue screen cuts in. This was not uncommon in early NV drivers when Vista was released.

Search Nvidia TDR error for background.

    Edit, additional information:
You can find registry hacks to increase the timeout but I'm not recommending it. All that will do is stop the blue screen but the driver will still be failing. The difference will be that your game will 'jump' to windows where you will see a message about the dirver recovering from a failure instead of a BSOD :(

Ok I did all the above, what was new was running driver sweeper and changing the virtual memory setting, but am still getting BSOD.

Anything else I can try? Diablo 3 just always crashes.

    1. Check if you have a file called Windows.old in the OS(C: ) drive. If you do, that means that you are going to have to re install Windows again to get rid of it, let me know if that's the case and I'll tell you what to do.

    2. Try the BETA driver from the Nvidia website.

Sounds like a good idea. What Natalia is getting at is that if this folder exists then you did an upgrade install that could keep a lot of your existing settings. You need to make sure it's a clean, fresh install.

    Good luck!

All games, but windows never freezes. I am going to try something new, going to uninstall the 3d driver and just keep the regular driver. I do not have the 3d screen so I am guessing I will not need this. I will test it out tonight with D3 and SC2.

Just an update. Dell came over with a new motherboard and GPU, the install took about 2 hours, but everything is working perfectly now. The Dell tech was great and very gentle with the machine. It was an awesome thing to see the whole laptop taken apart and put back together, I got quite a good education. As a result of the awesome service I bought a 2 year extension warranty. After hearing all the horror stories of dell techs, I have to say my experience was the opposite.
