I've encountered this BSOD before.. i though i'd fixed it, but i was wrong.
This rarely occurs when i play games on my AW M17-R3, it suddenly goes to a black screen with white vertical stripes after a minute it goes to BSOD.
    Here's the details:

On Sun 11/20/2011 3:02:09 PM GMT your computer crashed
    crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\112011-23353-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: atikmpag.sys (atikmpag+0x744C)
    Bugcheck code: 0x116 (0xFFFFFA8007C632F0, 0xFFFFF88004C9744C, 0x0, 0x2)
    Error: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR
    file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\atikmpag.sys
    product: AMD driver
    company: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
    description: AMD multi-vendor Miniport Driver
Bug check description: This indicates that an attempt to reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed.
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: atikmpag.sys (AMD multi-vendor Miniport Driver, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.).

Currently i have the CCC 11.7 version for ATI HD6870.

On Sun 11/20/2011 3:02:09 PM GMT your computer crashed
    crash dump file: C:\Windows\memory.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: dxgkrnl.sys (dxgkrnl!TdrResetFromTimeout+0x214)
    Bugcheck code: 0x116 (0xFFFFFA8007C632F0, 0xFFFFF88004C9744C, 0x0, 0x2)
    Error: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR
    file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\dxgkrnl.sys
    product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
    company: Microsoft Corporation
    description: DirectX Graphics Kernel
Bug check description: This indicates that an attempt to reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed.
The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module. Your system configuration may be incorrect. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver on your system which cannot be identified at this time.

IDK about this DirectX issue, i have DirectX 11 version.

The Dell Driver support for Alienware M17X-R3 has no driver downloads anymore. Please help me.

UPDATE: Finished updating CCC 11.10. Still hoping for the removal of BSOD issue. Please help asap.

Those VIDEO_TDR_ERROR crashes often indicate an overclock that is too aggressive for the card in that particular game or application. New drivers rarely avoid the problem, but you are not dependent on Dell for drivers. The most recent AMD reference drivers are Catalyst 11.11 WHQL ( http://www2.ati.com/DriVeRs/mobile/11-11_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl.exe), but some are having problems with that release. The preceding Cat 11.10 set is available here: http://www2.ati.com/DriVeRs/mobile/11-10_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl.exe. You should be able to just install the new drivers over your existing drivers. But first check the clocks on your 6870M.

That makes sense. The issue i am having happens only when i set my video card to max performance via the Catalyst Control Center (set to 1000Mhz) and the BSOD never happens when in maximize battery life (set to 400Mhz).
I'm done installing the CCC 11.10, thanks for reminding me about the 11.11 i was just about to look for that driver update. The BSOD rarely happens (i rate about 2 out of 10) but i really want to get rid of it. Do you think i should stop setting it up to max performance mode?

BTW, these are the games i had encountered VIDEO_TDR_ERROR:
    Lost Planet II
    Grand Theft Auto IV
    Divinity II: Flames of Vengeance
    Fable III
    The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

And these games doesn't seem to tire out my video card (no BSOD ever occured):
    Torchlight
    Ragnarok
    Dead Space II
    Prototype
    Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Thanks you the info man. You helped me a lot. :)
