Im getting a another new m17x R3 I will mostly play BF3 I would like to know if I would get a significant performance gain if I upgrade to a 580m...

    Intel® Core™ i7 2670QM 2.2GHz (3.1GHz w/Turbo Boost, 6MB Cache)
    +
    6990M or 580m

Worth it to Add $80 more for the 580m?

How about the throttling issues? Also optimus, I heared that people what it off why? I also prefer changing gpu to igp manually... SO is it worth it?

    THANKS!

Thanks for your reply, anyways I went with the 6990m and I think is really close to the gtx 580m.

Well heres my new specs for my M17x R3:

    *Intel® Core™ i7 2670QM 2.2GHz (3.1GHz w/Turbo Boost, 6MB Cache)
    *4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz (2DIMMS)
    *500GB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s
    *2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6990M
    *Slot-Load Dual Layer DVD Burner (DVD+-RW, CD-RW)
    *Killer™ Wireless-N 1103 a/g/n 3x3 MIMO for Gaming & Video
    *17.3-inch WideFHD 1920 x 1080 60Hz WLED

I think this was a steal since it was only $1,597.82 :D that w/ CA Tax, Shipping, & Disposal fee!!!

(I will try to call later on to try to upgrade my shipping to overnight since the sales person who I was talking to wont budge about free overnight shipping)

I will be upgrading ram when it arrives. Also Would it be ok to mix ram modules up? Since I only ordered 4GB maybe I can mix that up with the same speed but different manufacturer? Or is it better take those off and install identical ram modules?

I will upgrade the ram too, and I think I will put the same brand, so take them off, but we should listen to pros, NICE order btw, enjoy your new beast :)

Excellent price for a new M17x R3 with those specs!!

You can mix and match ram as long as it has the same specs (i.e., speed, voltage, and timings). You can put slower ram in, but ram will only run as fast as the slowest module

Yes the m17x-R3 uses a MXM 3.0b Standard Slot. However you are forced to only use nVidia if you are running the 3D 120Hz Screen though...

if you don't have the 120hz screen, you can upgrade to the 6990m if you wish. Its only if you have that screen then you have to stick with Nvidia

Do you get a better deal when calling Dell directly? Because I get a price over $1800 when I put in the exact same specs as you mentioned...with the LCD panel upgrade and wireless card upgrade. Thanks in advance.

hey, i could have sworn i saw you somewhere else lol :D

You NEVER order directly through the Dell website. You either go through a reseller or call them up and bargain. The resellers have a 20% margin so they can give you 10% off or more without flinching. The best part of going through a reseller is that you essentially just ordered through them with a discount, but its still shipped from Dell, and you deal with Dell thereafter.

    You can try this number:

    1-800-695-8133 - Option 3

I used the saveology discount as well and ordered almost the exact same computer as you. Came out to around 1949 pre-discount and ended up just over 1500 with tax. Amazing discount.

ATI has come a long way on their drivers actually. I wouldn't say they're nearly as bad as they once were. I will say however that you gotta be patient, which many users unfortunately are not, including myself at times.
