    Hi dudes,

If this cable is needed then you buy this LCD do you think that you can replace the CCFL display with the nice LED display?

If anyone more informed can give an answer, I can probably spend a little cash and give it a try, but I'm just not that much informed about laptop displays.

Nope I haven't. I'm still a little bit reluctant with LCD changes, due to the hassle I've been with Dell to change the f**** LCD and they didn't change the backlit...idiots.

I'm trying to find someone who understands laptop LCDs technology in order to comprehend every detail and then to start playing with this stuff, while not burning the motherboard or something else.

@tomX, do you have some way to contact you, because I don't seem to be able to send PMs here. I really wanna give this a try and if it works, to create 1 proved guide to upgrading the display of this beast.

    Hi Guys,

After hearing that the LG RGB screens from the Precisions are superior to the Samsung ones, I ordered the following parts:

    LG LP171WU5(TL)(A2) LCD 17.1" WUXGA

Dell Alienware M17x LCD Cable (17")

Despite the hassle mentioned elsewhere (the screen being glued in and behind metal backing that must be cut off) it went smoothly. There are two metal clips with screw holes at the top that must be cut off because the have no where to go. But that was easy enough. The backlights are build into the devices. The inverter and its cables are not needed anymore on the RGB, so that came out. New Screen looks amazing!

I'm sorry I did not take pictures of the process. My camera is broken, unfortunately. But please ask any questions!

    Uhh, no photos :(
    Shame on you :)

So you say it works, just you needed to do some physical damage to it.
Please tell me, how strong the LCD is glued to the Bezel, becouse i would like to change the bezel only as it got scratched a little.
I have RGB already and i would like to know is there a way to get new bezel and switch LCD panel without harming it :)

Strongly glued. I cracked the bezel in two places (same place on each side -- where it is weakest, at a screw joint) because of the force required to pull the screen off. Now, those two cracks are on the back side, and aren't a problem from a cosmetic or structural integrity standpoint. But it was not easy to get off, I assure you. Also, be prepared to deal with the dust from cutting through the metal. You should do the pulling of the screen somewhere very far from the cutting, otherwise little pieces of dust are sure to get between the two. I used compressed air rather than vacuum. Not sure if that was better or worse, but it worked.

To reiterate: the physical damage I had to do to the screen was very very minor. Two small, think little brackets protruding from the top of the screen, which are for screws in whatever setup it was designed for (6400 I believe). I used a saw, but probably could have got them off by wiggling them back and forth, or perhaps just bent them down instead. But in any case, that was the smallest of tasks compared to cutting through the bezel and pulling the screen off.

Windows automatically installs "Generic PnP Display Driver". I have done a lot of searching for a more specific driver for the LG LP171WU5(TL)(A2). Any ideas? Thanks Guys.

Hi i know there are a number of threads about the R2 screen but what im finding is what to look for exactly.. and wich screens will work and wich will not work.. so i am wondering will this screen work with the M17xR2?
\Dell OEM Precision M6500 Complete LED LCD Screen WUXGA/

well if some one would let me know that would be great thanks..

and also is this a RGB acreen being its the 1920x1200? or just LED?

and it any one has a list of what will work 100% and whats needed to make it work would be awesome thanks again.

also for are screens is there a differance in part numbers?
    J6JG5 M17x 17" LED LCD WUXGA
    and
Alienware M17x 17" WUXGA LED LCD Panel J2CY8
    and
R610K Alienware M17x 17" WUXGA LED LCD Panel
im going to buy one i think and the one ive found is the one with the part number J6Jg5, but is it the true RGB led?
well ive found them all and the prices vary/..
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
    edit:
so I bought this screen on ebay.. wanted the screen more than a cpu at the moment lol..
NEW DELL ALIENWARE J6JG5 M17x 17" LED LCD WUXGA
wasnt sure if this was the rgb one but i hope to god it is lol//or at the least 1980x1200
pic is that great taken from ebay lol..but i took a second pic from ebay of one claiming to be the RGB Led and they look the same.. you be the judge..

    1.mine that i bought.

2.the one for 600.00 claiming to be RGB but looks just like the one i paid 300 for..

well I hope this screen works out to my advatage.. also for warranty purposes.. if i ever have to send this in do i need to put back on the old screen or call dell and tell them i bought a screen that was brand new replacment from them and have there tech install it?

There is no way to differentiate the RGB LED / LCD on simple pictures like this...

you will need a utility like Everest to identify the part number once it is installed...

As for the M6500 screen I think it is not compatible due to the fact that the conections are not the same on the motherboard as with the M17x...

Tell us what comes out of it.

    Hi.

I just installed this screen, and I am having an issue, the screen does not turn on after start and restart. I have to power off then on again to make a windows resume and the screen will display normally. It seems as if the auto power on/off is not working. Did you experience these issues Makwu?

Sorry to bump up this topic but i just realised that i have the CCFL screen on my R2 and i really want to have the RGB LED screen.

This topic does not seem to be clear on wether i can, or can NOT use this and this components to get a RGB screen.

Can someone please verify if this is a no go?

I contacted the dealer on e-bay (pchub.com) and the had this to say about the matter:

    Hi,

    for all laptop,
you can't just change the screen from the CCFL-LCD to LED-LCD screen... due to the specification is not the same.

    Thank You
    Teo K.S. ( Mr.)
    Customer Care

    Pch***

Ok so i found a screen, pleeeaaaaase can someone confirm that this will work for me?
The pictuse for the screen are HERE

email me, pm or just reply please.....

First off, let me say: SORRY!
Sorry for the bad English and sorry for the resurrection of this topic.

I know this topic has been done a few times here but, these forums are still not clear on this matter.
Perhaps i can shed some new light on this topic to clear up any confusion. (with pictures of the swap out)

On contemplating on buying a second hand R2 i read that the ONLY the (M17X) R2 had the best screen.
This goes for screen size (16:10) as well als colouring (Full Gamut).

Before i bought the Alienware R2 i had the Dell XPS L702x and that had the best screen i had ever seen on a notebook.
The sound from JBL is unmatched but that is a different topic :)
So anyway, back to the topic at hand, this screen came nowhere near the XPS L702x but i thought....meh, must be old or at the time of introduction it must have been a big deal......i never knew that the AW notebooks came with bugdet and/or high end screens :(

Reading these forums, i discovered that at the moment of writing i unfortunatly have the CCFL type screen.

I noticed this because of the fact that my screen dims itself if there are only dark colours and brightens itself when there are white image to be displayed.

So i found AT LEAST 3 separate topics:

    HERE

One of the last entries state that a person succesfully swapped out from CCFL to RGB but did not log steps or took pictures.
This entry can be found HERE
The cable mentioned is the 0HP693 or HP693. this cable has an extra attaching cable (purpose unknown at moment of writing) but this is the only cable that will work. The cable that comes with the inverterboard/CCFL screen will not support/fit the RGB type screen.

The screen would be the LP171WU5(TL)(A2) LCD 17.1" WUXGA but here is the second part of the issue.
There are RGB screens supplied by Samsung but also by LG.
The LP171WU5(TL)(A2) LCD 17.1" WUXGA is suppplied by LG and is rumoured to have a better out-of-the-box display quality but this was never verified with actual fact.
The real differences between the Samsung and the LG are supposedly negligable.

This part of the topic points out what screen you would have by checking your hardware with Astra32

This is what i did and i have the R610K (CCFL)...as offcourse stated before (sorry to get repetitive but i am trying to point out that identifying the correct part is critical)

So back the current time index:

Here you can see the Hardware differences.
The left is the CCFL and picture on the right is the RGB LED screen.... I have the properties of the left picture....but i want to end up with the specs on the right picture :)

After a long search i finaly found a screen assembly that will PROBABLY house the RGB LED version and i need an "expert" on this.

Having CCFL lighting, is it even possible to just "simply" swap out hardware and get RGB?
As stated, i found a screen assembly but i don't have the knowledge to see if it is the right screen for me.

Pictures of the (partial) assembly can be found Here, Here and Here

(DOWNLOAD THE PICTURES FOR FULL SCREEN RESOLUTION!!!)

Please help me decide whether i have the right screen/item or not.
I've seen it comes with the 0J2CY8 indicater/sticker and the right cable (0HP693)
The rest is the screen assembly that is incomplete (no rear and/or camera) but i can swap these out from my current assembly.

Depending on the help/assistance, i wish to make a documented step by step DIY tutorial for everybody that is still unclear or is reluctant to do it him or her self because of conflicting or lack of information.

    So in short:
    HELP ME, HELP YOU :)

Yes, that will work. It's the latest RGB panel for the M17x R2, also compatible with the M17x.

Sweet.....so i asume you know your way around an AW then :) (glanced at your profile)
This IS the best screen for the R2 (the RGB LED)....i see offcourse i have to swap out the camera and the wifi but other then that......it would be just plug and play?

So understanding that you are admin, would it not be easier if you could reply here

You can just remove my last 2 comments then.

Also, i hope you know (or point me into the right direction) how to remove the adhisive/glue layer from the bezel and front panel......Hair dryer or something or can it be done in a less dramatic way?

Hello, unphoto, i merged your thread with this one in order to keep this info in one place.

The screen assembly in your photos already includes the wifi antennas you just need to recover the webcam from your current monitor.
There's no need to remove the plexy just to replace the assembly.

All you have to do is swap the webcam and plug the ribbon i circled in red and put on your current lid.

Remember to perform a power drain before you disassemble your system.

Yes, i can but keep in mind that if you mess it up you have only yourself to blame.

First of all you'll have to find a plexy or make one. Before you go searching for one, you should know that it's impossible to find.

With that out of the way, get a thin blade, a heat gun, a roll of double sided sticky tape and a few pieces of credit-card-like pieces of plastic.
Set the heat gun at a low temperature and as you heat the borders try to slowly pry the plexy off. Place the pieces of plastic between the plexy and the assembly as you go, to prevent the former from sticking back and continue until you finish.
Clean the old sticky tape, place new one and stick your new plexy on the chassis. :)

Be patient and go slowly if you want to preserve the old one as it is very fragile!

This will be a piece of frustrating cake :)

What about dust collection between the glas and screen?
I asume doing it i a workshop is a big no no....

    Ps.
I can't wait to get started, i love these type of little projects :)

Yes you can put a RGB LED screen assembly on the M17x (R1). I've done this myself.

Only you can tell us but one way to protect it is to put a thin microfiber cloth between it and the keyboard before closing the lid.

I personally had an R1 with the RGB, when I ordered it years ago I asked for advice on what to order. Many said "get the screen upgrade!" Then I asked if I should go with an I7, but many said dual core was fine. So I ended up with an R1 with the RGB instead of an R2. Such horrible advice. Back in the days of dual core vs quad core debate.

    Time to resurrect this thread.

I just got myself an LP171WU5 TL A4 . This is the RGB LED screen in the M6500.
The internet claims that the M6500 RGB LED screen is compatible with the M6400, and since the M6400 RGB LED screen with HP693 cable is compatible with the M17x R2.
I assumed that the LP171WU5 TL A4 should be compatible with the M17x R2.

Unfortunately, after I installed the LP171WU5 TL A4 in my M17x R2, nothing happened. I powered the laptop on, the laptop does its stuff but the screen remains black, it's as if it's not even power on.
Am I doing something wrong ? Has anyone ever experienced anything similar?

Update. Got the screen to work.
    So for future references
The LG LP171WU5 TL A4 works with M17x R2 using the HP693 cable.

Hey, what is the advantage of this pannel conpared to the original RGB mentionned in the thread?

Other question : what did you do to get the screen to work?

LGs are generally a bit better than the other manufacturer. The fact that it was used in a mobile workstation should speak enough. There's also LP171WU5-TLB1 which is the first mobile DreamColor display (used in 8730w), better than the TLA4, both color and viewing angles. Would it work, not sure. The last one is a stretch, but one worth exploring - LP171WU8-SLB1. That's the RGB LED IPS used in THE DreamColor 8740w. Glorious thing! I made a topic about it (M17x-R2 IPS option), could try to find it.

@tomX Yes. I have been using it for over an year. I bought a new cable. In fact I bought 3 HP693 cables before I finally got it to work properly. The cables on the second hand market are not in very good shape.

@triturbo I did extensive research before choosing the TLA4, the TLB1 or any other model such as the SLB1 are not pin compatible. You would need to create a custom cable interface for these screens.

Where I said that it would be easy :D Seriously though, the TLB1 is nowhere to be found, not in a good shape anyway. Someone might get lucky, who knows. As for the LP171WU8-SLB1 - M17x-R2 motherboard end, DreamColor's display end, mix and match in the middle. Should do. Less color channels, but should do, unless the display's circuity refuse to work without the additional color lines. Then comes option number two - full implementation including the color board, it requires DP lines, they could be borrowed form the MXM slot. It's quite lengthy, I'm just giving a general guide. If anyone decides to dig into it, feel free to contact me.

If the first one doesn't work. Yes! The screen is 100% compatible with the M17x R2.

@triturbo For a 4 year old system, I doubt anyone will go through such a bother. Probably in an year or so, we will see QHD or UHD 17.3 inch screens, at which point our machines can finally be put to rest.

I for one wont give-up 16:10. I'll move to a desktop rather than go 16:9. Before that I would try to get every last bit of performance that the last (moddable) 16:10 machines have to offer. So when I finish my 8740w project, M17x-R2 is up next. Would I bother to get the IPS working? Probably. For example I've tried a handful of displays on my 5920G. I even tried to get the M4400's RGB LED working, but the difference between the two was too big to overcome (CCFL for the 5920G, all back-light technologies for M4400). That didn't stop me to make that very custom cable required - 5920G motherboard end and M4400's display end. Oh and since there wasn't (and there's still nowhere to be found) schematic of the display, I beeped my way (multimeter) to figure out the input terminal of the display (using M4400 motherboard schematics and the RGB LED cable). So, not really a stranger to crazy mods (if it doesn't work it's crazy, otherwise, might as well be a genius, or at least an awesome one). The resolution might go up, but the packaging is still rather unpleasing. 16:10 is just the right amount of wide vs deep. Might rethink my stance on the problem at some point in future, but at least for the foreseeable 5 or so years, I'm standing behind 16:10 (that's how much I expect the 8740w to be relatively relevant and seeing how Intel plays it arrogant, I don't think that it's a stretch).

Good luck then. Looking at the specs, I will probably not want to switch to the LP171WU8 - SLB1 - response time is 15 ms and backlight is at 210 cd/m2 also the antiglare is not as matte, which is really needed on the Alienware to cancel the glare from the gorilla glass.

The best next thing is the LP171WU5-TLB1 (which is pin incompatible). If you can get that one to work, I would be the next to upgrade with your help.
Places that have it: http://www.panelook.com/LP171WU5-TLB1_LG Display_17.1_LCM_invitemdetail_69215.html

Also Aliexpress has a bunch: http://www.aliexpress.com/w/wholesale-lp171wu5-tlb1.html
That's where I got my screen.
