This can be a general thread, but I am wondering what the best SSD for the M17X, specifically the R3 is. I have a Corsair Force 3, replacement one actually, but I am thinking about switching to another Sandforce drive because this one has been BSODing and such. After the latest reboot it is fine, but now I just want a better one. I saw the Kingston HyperX SSD just came out and I am considering getting that. What do you all think? I use my PC for gaming and programming and other computer engineering stuff.
What in your minds is the best SSD right now?

Intel 510 or Crucial M4.
Both relaible drives. Vertex 3 works with a LPM fix.
These 3 are the most used in the R3 looking at signature's from NBR members here. -
Very happy with my Intel 510 SSD. Easy to install and setup.
-
Im really happy with the Crucial M4.
-
For some reason I don't like the Micron controller drives, it seems that they are slower than the Sandforce models, even though those have trouble. You all think that the Vertex 3 is the fastest still? I think the new Kingston may beat it.
-
You seem to already know what you want...so what was the point of your post?
-
Maybe I should rephrase my question a bit, what is the fastest SSD for the R3? That is really what I am after. Is it still the Vertex 3 or has something else surpassed it yet?
-
This is supposed to be the fastest on the market right now:
SSDs - Mushkin Enhanced
It was only released last week, 90k IOPS! I have bought the non-deluxe edition, still waiting for it since most resellers are back-ordered. The price is also great for its performance, around $80 cheaper than the Vertex 3 Max IOPS. Going to have to wait to see if it really performs, and if it is as reliable as Mushkin claims. -
well i have the Mushkin Chronos deluxe 120GB and honestly its an amazing drive.. havent had any issues with it and its freaking FAST!.. also the quality in their products are just outstanding.. i will never ever go back to ocz or corsair!
-
Yeah I love Corsair but the Force 3 is really bumming me out. They usually have great products but this one is a lemon. The Chronos Deluxe looks awesome, I may go for that one instead. I guess Mushkin just started making SSDs huh?
-
well if ud like a cheap ssd thats riddled with problems go for the corsairs/ocz's lmfaoXD... but if u want something reliable and fast. hands down mushkin wins... unless u wanna go the intel route or patriot.
-
I would get an Intel SSD if they would use the Sandforce controller, that would be a perfect combination! When Intel makes a SATA III controller I will buy that SSD.
-
I've never heard of chronos until now and I am intrigued. I wonder if this drive is as reliable as the intel drive.
-
Same here, speeds are amazing but how does it hold up. Price is very good for a 120GB drive.
-
Cheap? lol its like $300 for the Max IOPS. Most people don't have the issues and the ones that do most of them can fix it with software changes.
-
i used to own a corsair drive and due to the issues i returned it and swapped it for a ocz drive to find out that they had just as many issues.. so finally i just returned that paid the difference and got a mushkin 120.. i couldnt be happier with this drive.. its a solid investment...
-
well its slightly cheaper, but its quite fast. although you cannot be sure that you will be the lucky guy and will not experience issues. like me - cannot fix freezing using any fix (described in separated thread).
-
That doesn`t make sense. Intel is known for making reliable SSDs, while SandForce is known for releasing crappy controllers that is plagued with problems. And Intel have SATA 3 SSD, Intel 510
-
FYI most of the controller problems are with the SB implementation of SATA3
-
FYI it is SandForce who let customers betatest their controllers. The marvell controllers that you find in Crucial M4, C300 and Intel 510 works flawless. Shure, the M4 had some freezing errors earlier, but that is all taken care of with a firmware. You don`t see OCZ fix their problems, instead they are fumbling around in the dark because they are dealing with a unfinished controller that was built for speed, not longevity. Don`t believe me? Check out the ratings of Vertex 3 at newegg, and compare them to M4 or any other controller than Sandforce, like toshiba og samsung. You will be shocked on how big the difference is.
So no, Sandy Bridge is not at fault at all. It is the lazy scumbags who release fast but unreliable SSDs and the companies who refuse to RMA the drives that should but point out for the customer firmware #99999 that supposedly should take care of the problems. -
Never had a problem with them in 3-4 drives I had freezes on a different controller before Sandforce (jmicron I believe). I think its the same as m17x. It looks bad because so many people complain but in reality its only a small %.
-
The percentage is lower of course. But the comparisons between the brands are valid and shows how more reliable the drives are compared to each other. People put in good reviews there as well which is why you get some idea.
Just looking at the Vertex 3 at newegg you will see 37% rating it 1/5 and 2/5 eggs. M4 have 0% -
I'll test the **** out of it still can return. Ran fine in my lenovo laptop though. Don't want the intel but the m4 seems good.

Where are people buying the chronos ssd?
-
well I live in canada so i bought my chronos deluxe 120gb ssd for $280ish... I'm sure ull be able to find them at ur local computer shops if they arnt sold out.. You guys should be able to get them from newegg.ca/com
