I have a gtx 580m on my alienware m17x r3 and wanted to get everyones opinion here. It is dying, causing computer to reboot constantly and black screens.

So my question is, what video card is the best replacement given whats out there now that fits in the chasis without modifying it.

Normally you dont need to mod anything on chasi or fan. If you're looking for plug and play cards you will be stuck on 5xx séries for R3. But if you decide to mod anything, you got many option for upgrade, like 780M would run fine on R3. There's some AMD card what you should consider too, like one 7970m will be almost a plug and play, just need to pay attention on the guidelines on this forum.
these cards requires drivers mods and maybe bios mods, buts its easy to do and you just need to do one time. ;D

As Az mentions - 780m would work. I'd suggest having a quick search of the forums to see peoples experiences of different cards in the m17x r3. I also had the same issues (still have my m17x r3). I went through 2 before deciding enough was enough and upon the wise advice of other members here opted for a 680m. It has run rock solid with low temperatures and is almost like a 580m sli.

Still, have a look around and see what card you prefer based on what people here have tried.

When you put in the 680m did you have any problems. I bought a 680m Clevo and installed it got no video. Are there any steps I need to make before installing it, to get it to work?

I bought a Clevo 680m and followed the normal steps to install a video card, yet when I powered on no video and computer wouldnt post. Anything out of the ordinary I need to do to get it to work.
