I am looking to upgrade from the standard RAM (4GB) to 8GB /w Intel XMP. What would be the best for 2630QM m17x R3? Direct links would be much appreciated.
-
The 2630qm doesn't support PC3 12800 but if you had the 2720 or 2820, this is what you would want:
Newegg.com - Kingston HyperX 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model KHX1600C9S3K2/8GX
I think the 2630qm only supports PC3 10666 which means something like this is what you want:
Newegg.com - G.SKILL 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Laptop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-8GBSQ -
Newegg. I ordered these last night.
Edit: jywang ninja'd me. -

You can take advantage of the speed, it's just not a native speed supported by the cpu itself as you get with the 2720/2820qm. You can use the XMP profiles in the BIOS and still get a full 1600mhz.

For those of you that want to buy the Newegg ram there is a discount I believe towards this newegg promo code page.
I have myself bought this RAM for my R2 and it's quite good. Well actually the first time I got it, it was not working. I had written a whole post on this issue.
The computer would crash all the time with a blue screen. It took me a long time to figure out it was the RAM that was causing that and I think thanks to Joker or Mandrake we figured it out.
So if you guys have a PC that do not crash and you change the RAM and it crashes it's probably it... -
I went with the HyperX. It's not much more than 1333 ram, either.

I thought that the timing is still going to be more important overall
Timing: 9-9-9-27
Thats the timings on the Kingston Hyper X. The Last number being the most important since it shows the overall performance.
If you look at something like OCZ ram 1333hz its 9-9-9-20.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227549
I do put a disclaimer though that it would only go faster if your using only 2 of your DIMMs. If you use all 4, I believe that the Kingston would perform faster then.
Please correct me if I am wrong -
IIRC, timing isn't nearly as important as it used to be due to the fact that the memory controller is now on die. I could be wrong though.

I read a review and they tested out different timings and the timing made such a tiny difference with sandy bridge that you would only notice it with a 10-20 more point increase on a benchmark and it would have 0 effect on real world usage. The ram speed on the other hand made a huge difference and sandy bridge makes the most noticeable jump in performance when going from 1333mhz to 1600mhz after 1600mhz the performance jumps are smaller on 1866 and 2133 but they were also there. They recommend that gamers and power users get 1600mhz ram for sandy bridge and hardcore benchers get 2133mhz. At 1333mhz the ram bandwidth bottlenecks the sandy bridge proc 1600mhz gives enough bandwidth to lift that bottleneck which is why they saw a 10 second decrease in w prime times going to 1600mhz and only 3 second declines going above 1600mhz
Kingston Hyper X RAM is a gold standard if you want the best ram you can't ever go wrong with it. 1600mhz Kingston Hyper X ram will give you the best performance.
Only reason i got g skill ram on my phenom x6 proc is because it was specially designed for the phenom x6 black edition processors and runs beautifully at 1800mhz -
Can swing c7 @1600 if you get a 2720 or better, too -
Hey, (and this is slightly off topic I know) when you guys say that 1600MHz RAM makes a difference...how big a difference are we talking about in real world applications? If I order I'm considering upgrading to the 2720QM, in part just for the ability to use faster RAM, if it's a significant enough difference.
-
in the W Prime processor test when they switched from 1333mhz to 1600mhz ram using sandy bridge it cut the time by 10.5 seconds. Don't know what that translates to in real world usage.
-
Cut the time by 10.5 seconds from what originally?
What I'm interested in is game benchmarks. If it's only worth one or two frames per second, then it's not worth the money for me. -
wow ! I dont know that 1600 is that much better than 1333..
Any link or source to confirm that? -

for R3, it would be 16GB for 4 slots...

I just ordered some of the 1600Mhz memory.
-
the 16gb @ 1600 limitation is only because no one has put out consumer 8gb dimms at 1600...as far as I know.
max ram in the r3 is 32gb. I don't see why frequency would limit that (except what I said above). -
I'm in for the 16gb ram too, $199 shipped with two 4gb flash drives sounds great to me!
-
If it's anything like their other deals, you'll only get 1 flash drive.
Still a great deal though. -
Eclipse Computers - Product Details
How about this. I'm new to RAM stuff so I found something Dell uses. If anyone got anything better price or a better ram do tell me. I want to upgrade it to either 8 or 12gb myself. If anyone knows another ram item that will work or is better product do tell me. Give me something I can buy in UK...
I got i7 Processor 2720QM. Also any real life difference in 1600Mhz or 1333Mhz?
By the way is 12gb really needed yet? Is it better to go for it then 8gb. -
Should I leave the 4gb of ram that dell provides in the laptop and add the 8gb of 1600 into the other slots?
Will that cause problems? -

If your running multiple VMs on your system than the more RAM the better.
Only you can answer that question depending on what you're using the system for. -
It is!!!/
So anyone up to giving me a 8gb ram link that I can buy in UK. That is for this laptop
How about this then:

You can grab them HERE in UK.
(i know they have a picture of desktop Hyper X but the serial number is what counts and those are actaully the laptop HyperX @1600 Mhz)
cheers -

Glad to be of assistance!

2 x ($-7.99) DISCOUNT FOR AUTOADD #28685
I'm totally cool either way honestly, I could care less as $199 for 16gb of fast notebook ram blows my mind. -
You can mix and max ram as long as it is of the same frequency and cas latency (the #-#-#-#, ie - 9-9-9-20).
Dell ships the laptop with 1333 c9 RAM.
I thought I was getting 2 mobos with the 2 Ares GPUs that I purchased, because it said I would get 2 in my cart....I didn't; it's in the fine print. -
Anyways, yes, do they have to be same to work? -

So therefore, the Kingston ram is NOT compatible? Or will it just run at 1333 instead of 1600? Sorry for noobish questions -
No, it will run at 1600. Unless you have the base cpu, then you will have to just edit xmp in the bios to take advantage of the speed.

The 2630 supports 1333 so the base line from Dell is 1333 ram. The 2720 and 2820 support 1600 that's why people are buying the stock ram and upgrading to the Kingston HyperX. hope that helps.
-
sigh, I've said this so many times and I know you've read it a few!
if you want to use the ram that ships with the system, you need to buy ANY form of 1333mhz 9-9-9-24 ram. There's 3 types (pc3 10666, etc) of the same frequency, and all should work as long as frequency and CL are same.
If you add hyperx ram, it will run at 1333 c9.
If you want to replace the ram with hyperx, go for it. It can and will run at 1600mhz, but you need to adjust settings in bios.
If you have a 2630QM....
-set XMP profile to 2
If you have a 2720QM or 2820QM...
-set XMP profile to 2, OR
-manually set frequency to 1600 and select XMP profile 1. This gets you 1600mhz @c7
WHY?
xmp profile 1 tells your bios to use this info - 1333 c7
If you set the frequency manually, it will load the profile, then mod the frequency...but not the timings
so you get xmp pofile 1 + higher frequency = 1600 c7 (only on 2720+2820)
To reiterate
YES! i7-2630QM WILL run hyperx ram at 1600 c9
YES! i7-2720QM and i7-2820QM WILL run hyperx ram at UP TO 1600 c7
NO! You can't mix and match ram frequencies and timings. -
-
And just to make things clear
....You MUST change the xmp profile or frequency override in order to use 1600 regardless of CPU
BIOS defaults to XMP Profile: default
1600 is stored in xmp 2
(below shows the default settings for ram @bottom half of image)
and....
PS: Your CPU will ship slightly (2%) underclocked. You should probably bump it up to 100mhz bclk -
Thanks, Kune. That will help a lot of people, probably.
-
And here's what I run on a daily basis.
sort of....
I just re-played with settings and I guess something's not holding properly.
bclk is typically 103.1 and latencies are lower.
sigh, guess I need to retweak :/
...If I had a 2720 or better, I'd be running at c7. I've tried everything to get c7 though; nothing works. Even manually setting c7 would just set the ram to 1066mhz c7 :/ sad times for OEM cpus (not that the higher frequency or lower timings really do much of anything irl) -
-
i'll just make a new thread I guess. Gime 30mins to throw something together.

Definitely waiting to see how this is done.
