So, recently, I bought a samsung 830 SSD for my laptop, and proceeded to change my HDD with de SSD ( I put the SSD in the secondary slot, as it is said to bring less issues). Then I did a fresh windows 7 install, I followed the tutorial to install drivers in the correct order, And everything was going well until I got to the installation of "alienware command center" . It failed, because I didn't have the framework.net thingy... so, I went on the internet to try and download it to install, but they said that I had to be sure, before the install, that I have the last service pack installed and that all the windows critical updates are done. Fine, I head up to windows update and start it. In the middle of the installation, supriiiiise ! BSOD !
I figured maybe some component of windows update caused the BSOD, so i did a restore and tried to do the windows update with only the framework.net components. Great, BSOD again. So what should I do ? I can't install my last driver (command center) and if I try to update windows, it crashes everything.... I'm really stuck here, don't know what to do...
PS : I have a m17x r3 3d with windows professional and a geforce gtx 460m.
Thank you, in advance

What's the BSOD code and the file that's causing it?

Hi, at a guess I'd say that something in the failed installation 'broke' the dot-net framework
. Now every time windows update tries to patch it - bang! You could get whocrashed and see what did it with recommendations but at this early stage it might be best to just start again. This time as soon as windows is up and on the internet let it do all it's updates before adding in any drivers. And only use drivers from the dell site initially.
Good luck -
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
*** STOP: 0x0000000A
Is this helpful ? Doesnt say which file caused the error... However this time the computer feeezed when installing the software, I had to manually shut it down, and when I restarted it, it gave this BSOD
@micky : I already tried starting all from scratch, but it did the same thing... However I always started by disabling windows update and installing my drivers ( that are all from dell ) and en re enabled it, like they advise to do on this tutorial : http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...er-install-order-guide-alienware-systems.html
In fact, if I activate windows in the beginning, wouldnt it find crappy drivers instead of those from dell for my hardware ? -

Do you mean the whole windows install ? Because now every time i try to start windows normally, it gives me this BSOD. I am currently running the diagnostic, come to you in a sec !
Edit : just finished with the diagnostics, showed no problem... -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
For windows update I have never disabled it in dozens of installations. Let windows use the drivers it wants at the same time patches are being applied. Then when it's finished update with dell ones. I do know that the command center requires that dot-net is updated from windows update...
If you find whocrashed and run it, it will tell you a lot more about the cause of the bsod. -
Ok, now I have restored exactly to the point before installing dotnet, I'm gonna get whocrashed and run windows update so I can get some more information. After what, I'll report and try starting again from scratch as you advised. However, should I erase my SSD with the windows setup or should I secure erase it before re-installing windows , knowing that Ive been using the SSD only from yesterday ?

You'll be fine just letting the installer clear down the partition.

Ok, just one last question (i'm on the car coming home
), i wont be able to do the windows update without an ethernet cable, will i ? Since my wifi drivers won't be installed i won't have any internet ? Should i take a ethernet cable (which i have) or proceed with the installation of the drivers in order, until the wifi one, and then do the windows update ? I know i'm annoying, sorry ^^ !
-
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
I found that windows could find a wireless driver in the install - it asked if I wanted to do a dynamic update before continuing with the install, but yes, have an Ethernet cable in at the start of the install to be safe
Not annoying in the least, it's a stressful time

Ok did, the "whocrashed" thing, here's the report :
On fri 26/04/2013 21:29:46 your computer crashed
This was likely caused by the following module : ntoskrnl.exe
Bugchek code : 0xA (0x8, 0x2, 0x1, 0xFFFFF80002E928D6)
Error : IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\042613-6021-01.dmp
File path: C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Product: Microsoft Windows Operating System
Company: Microsoft Corporation
Dscription: NT Kernel & System
The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module.Your system configuration may be incorrect, possibly the culprit is in another driver on your system which cannot be identified at this time.
So now I'm gonna start from scratch, yaaaay
Anyway, don't worry, my father was driving when I responded earlier -

LOL, I had visions of texting while driving n my post being the last message on your phone -
Well, that doesn't narrow it down, then, I guess. I'm do the reinstalll, but a doubt came to me. I have a intel centrino ultimate-N 6300 AGN, the correct driver for it is it intel wifi link 6300 ? Or 6250 ? Cause the alienware resource cd tells me its the 6250, but doesnt detect a bunch of other hardware, so I don't know what to think...
Here : Driver e download | Dell Italia you can see all the drivers that could fit my system. -

Micky, you're a frickin' boss, I want to kiss you !!! As you said, I installed the couple of drivers needed to have internet, and then did all the windows updates, before continuing with the install of the other drivers, and now i've finished the install, i have donet 3.5.1 and 4 , command center works fine, everything is good.
However, last thing : when I boot I've noticed that it takes 2-3 seconds more than on my previous windows install. T find the right order I sure did a helluvalot restore and created restore points. So I was thinking of doing a last clean install, so I cold do it all at once, without restorng reseting etc etc... To have the disk like new, I could do a secure erase right ? Or is this all for nothing, and the couple of seconds lost on booting are because of all the stuff I installed with the windows updates ?
Anyway, thank you again for your previous help. -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
You wouldn't need to go as far as a secure erase, just use the disk selection screen to format the partition you intend to use in the windows installer. You're probably correct about the cause of the extra seconds although I've done identical installations (as far as I could tell) and seen differences in load times - very annoying. This machine used to get to the login screen before the windows logo had 'assembled'. Now it takes around 6 seconds longer and all I have installed is games
I think it's a good idea though to start fresh when you've been trying different things to resolve an issue - and you're not loosing anything you have already installed
Oh, and thanks for the virtual kiss -
Is there and cons of doing a secure erase ?? Because I might as well do it, since the ssd came with a software that can do the job wuire easily, I figured, why not ? But I wait for your answer, just to be sure

Sry, fell asleep
All secure erase does is overwrite existing data with a pseudo-random bit pattern. Means that even the FBI would be challenged to recover data. The magnetic remnants are weakened at each overwrite (usually 5 times). Not sure if it even applies to a SSD but who know what the MIB are capable of
Edit: was thinking about this, maybe they included this with the new drive so you could be sure the old one is erased (in case you dispose of it)? -
Not sur that we're talking about the same thing... It occurs to me that secure erase erases data in a way, so the SSD is perfectly clean, like the out of box state, and they usually do it after using it for 6 months- one year... At least, it is if I didn't understand wrong... I'm gonna make some research, and see if I can do it risk-free or better to go with the classic windows install directly.
Edit : indeed, that's what written on the program manual : "The Secure Erase feature provides the option to delete all data on an SSD in a way that it can never be recovered, restoring the SSD to its original performance." I will go for this option then ! -

I learned something else about SSD's today. I noticed that a folder with all my game shortcuts was taking longer and longer to open (icon view). Got to around 20 seconds to see all the contents. Read a thread about leaving some unpartitioned space makes them run faster. I shrink my boot partition by 25Gb and voila! Instant opening of my problem folder.
Don't know exactly what is going on but it worked for me -
Well glad I could return some of your help ! I am doing the secure erase right now, after I finished my windows install, I'll report a final time, and then I hope it will be the end of my problems !

Fingers crossed

Phew, I'm finally finished installing and everything works fine ! However, I did some benchmark of the SSD with crystadiskmark, and while I get 430mb/s sequential write speed (which is great, on the box it says max 400 ! ), I only have aroun 470 mb/s sequential write speed, wehn I should have around 520 mb/s, according to the box. Any idea what would cause this ?
Edit : nevermind, it was probably the benchmark software that was a little bit more "severe". I did the benchmarking with the software provided especially for the SSD, and I get those wonderful values :
The random random read is a little bit low, but I can guess I can deal with it, except if someone knows how to bring it to maximum values ! -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Maybe it's running at SATA II speed? Dell dropped SATA III on the R3 and you have to get a modded bios (and use port 0).
-
No no, definitely is Sata III speeds, I kept the A08 bios to have them, and in the intel rapid storage thing I can see that SATA transfer rate is 6 gb/s, which is SATA III. I guess it's nothing much that little IOPS ?
-
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Yeah, nothing you would 'see' in use. It could even be the overhead of the RAID BIOS
-
Sorry, but what do you mean by that ?? (My bios is set to AHCI, if that's what you meant
)
