Is there one floating about? bit of a novice when it comes to taking the Laptop apart completely. Where is the stock wireless card located?

Also, will this card connect to a 5ghz network? 2.4ghz round my street is clogged and slows speeds incredibly. On 5ghz, my partners Mac book pro gets wonderfull speeds. sadly, the 1501 dell card cant find or see a 5ghz network.

Here's the service manual for the R3. You'll find all the instructions you need to disassemble the system, replace the wireless card and reassemble.

    Alienware M17x-R3 Service Manual

The Wireless card is located under the keyboard, next to DIMM's 3 and 4. You'll see the wires from the antennae attached to it.

As for your second question, according to this: Killer Gaming::Solutions::Wireless the 1103 supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

It will be obvious. The colors are for the color of the wires for each antenna and the numbers are on the bigfoot card. I installed one at christmas time on my laptop. The same information was offerred to me and I came out of it in one piece :)

I use mine on a 5ghz network and can also confirm that it works fine on 2.4 and 5ghz (unlike the dell stock card)

Joe, the stock wireless card is located just under the keyboard near the center of the laptop. The hardest part for me was removing the center control cover (the plastic piece that surrounds your keyboard and where the DVD eject button and various other buttons sit) because i didn't want to crack the plastic with my screwdriver

Landscaper left a good vid up there and that service manual left by AZN is very useful (rep+ for both of you)

The one i used was this one:

    www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEC1U1WqG5Y

Its a vid that shows you how to get at the front 2 ram slots. To get at the wireless card, you will need to do all the same steps.

Warning: There's another mini pci-e slot there used for the HD wireless. Don't plug the wireless card in there

Hey joe i just installed mine with my ram. Theres a guide on you tube on how to change out all the ram and its very detailed. Helped me alot. Watch out not too strip the screws. I did on 2 of them but used my leathermen to get them off. You will see the wireless card once you get the keyboard off.

Went for the Intel 6300 in the end. Cheaper and easier to locate and buy.

Installed. Had a little scare when i put the laptop back together and only half the keyboard was responding but that was a loose connection :D
Installed driver ok. Not sure how to use the software, i just want to connect to the net !

Ha, right.Intel software. Connected. Thanks for all your info and advice guys.

I had the same scare when I added RAM to mine, only a few keys worked and my heart jumped. Luckily, it was just a loose cable!

Just be careful and make sure the keyboard cable is secure before you put everything back together, or find out the hard way like I did.

    Hey guys,

I'm trying to install this bigfoot 1103 on my Sager NP9170/P170EM. Received the laptop today, had to go to work, am going to install this when I get home. I'm curious about this 3rd grey cable. Was the 3rd cable just sitting there in your alienware? Even the Dell article linked on page 1 only shows 2 cables when removing the old card, so I'm assuming the 3rd grey cable will just be in there ready to go. Might differ on my clevo/sager p170em, but it does support 3x3 so i am hopeful it will be in there...

the m17x's (r3/r4) for sure come with all 3 antennas no matter what wireless card comes with the machine. Hopefully your clevo/sager is the same way. Good luck. :) might have been better to ask in the clevo/sager forum for a better answer.

by following the dell guide you will get there.
removing keyboard is enough to get access to the wifi card.
the third wire is taped to the base with a plactic cap.
if you're in the netherlands i would to if for you as a favour :)

uhhh why intel? just saw it after reading..

Thanks guys, the Dell guide did come in handy. Thankfully the p170em comes with 3 antennae out of the box. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything with the search function in the clevo section, but found this post here, figured you'd be of help. Most difficult part was taking the screws off the keyboard, followed by figuring that the third cable belonged in the "CH2" plug since this step was different then the dell guide instructs for your systems.
