    Hi all,
I have a M17X R2. I was attempting to upgrade the memory ram with a 16Gb (8Gb x2), from Kingston DDR3 1600 Cl9 204, KHX116S9P1K2/16. Laptop did not power up, but went back to normal after I put old memory (2Gb x 2) back in.
Some suggestions include upgrade to A10 bios mod and change memory to 1333MHz. Quick check at window start up by pressing F2 showed I have A2 bios version.
When I tried the A10 bios mod as suggested here ( Alienware M17x-R2 A10 BIOS Unlocked OC Options), I have the error that "bios not flashable" error 144, screen stucked at error interface. I unplugged every thing, removed battery and laptop started back as normal
I then tried the A9 bios version, I ran into similar problem mentioning above.
I am wondering if anybody can help and point me in the right direction. All helps and suggestions are much appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Justin.

Howdy newbie. Welcome to the forums.

Try this BIOS version. Driver Details | Dell United States It's A05, the successor release of the A02 BIOS. If this doesn't flash then there's something wrong with your motherboard or CMOS. But we won't go there unless we absolutely have to. If the A05 flashes correctly, try the A09 again but make sure to download here ( Driver Details | Dell United States) from Dell again to make sure you have the correct file. If you get A09 flashed, you should be able to go to the modded A10 BIOS no problem. AS for your RAM, only certain brands will work at 16GB. I know the Corsair Vengeance RAM is one of them.

EDIT: I just read your other thread, you need to make sure your system is an R2 BEFORE trying to flash those BIOS. If you force flash R2 BIOS on the R1, your notebook will NOT go back to normal no matter what you do. The surefire way is to go to Dell's support site and type in your service tag number and see what your original configuration is supposed to be. If you have an R1, then I don't think you can get 16GB of RAM in it. The most the R1 can handle is 8GB IIRC.

Also, I believe that in order to get the 16GB in an R3 or R4 it must be 4*4GB modules.

Agreed, you can do 2x8GB RAM modules to make it to 16GB in the R2-R4. BUT, it the OP's other thread ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/700233-m17x-r2-memory-upgrade-help.html#post8990066) he states his system CPU is an Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q900. That would indicate the notebook is an R1 and I am not sure if any R1 users out there have been able to jury-rig 16GB into their systems.
