    Hello Everybody,

I have a M17X R4 with a GTX 680M 2gb. For some reason after the windows POST screen it goes to a black screen. I have read several posts about this but no real resolution.

What have a I looked into?:

    1) In safe mode I uninstalled the Nvidia Drivers, restarted again into safe mode and installed latest Nvidia drivers (Tried Beta and Official release with this method) Seem to work a day or so but then reverted back to black screen after post. This issue is intermittent. If I keep holding power button and forcing power off and turn it back on after about 2-3 starts it will boot properly.

    2) In safe mode uninstalled drivers, can CCleaner removed any misc driver data, restarted in safe mode and installed both beta and official drivers. Same result as #1

    3) tried uninstalling drivers in regular startup mode and restarted then installed new drivers.. still same result.

    4) formatted Laptop and reinstalled all drivers from Dell website. Made sure to install chipset and crucial drivers first with a restart after each driver install. Same result of 1,2 and 3.

    5) Took a jack hammer to alienware casing and within seconds problem was solved! no black screen! but no laptop either... lol.. just kidding... any help would be appreciated.

    Computer Specs:
    ---------------------------------
    Intel Core i7 3740QM
    16GB Ram 1600Mhz
    Nvidia GTX 680M 2GB
    3D Screen

Oh one more thing. Once windows 7 64bit Ultimate does load and I run games or benchmark tools everything works at proper levels.
    Thanks again,

Hi, this has been a problem for about 4 months now with NV drivers. Track down 314.22 and give that a go. If it's still happening then it might be the card is bad. 320.18 was destroying cards and for some, rolling back to 314.22 without sucess. Mine recently started doing the same in games, then in windows, then only safe mode. Replaced and all good :D

    That's a plan!

I also forgot to say that the first time I could not get into windows for more than a couple of seconds, rolling back in safe mode seemed to fix it for a couple of days. Then discovered that just any driver change would get windows running. But finally, as above.

There are two blank screen issues though. One of them has windows still running and is a monitor select issue. You can plug in an external monitor and see everything. The other is like yours and mine, a lockup with black screen, so some of the stuff is not quite the same.

Dell were good with the testing and after the ususal testing left me to run heaven4 for a while. 30 minutes later it locked up. One call back and a new card was sent next day! You can get awesome service from dell :D

Great advice Micky, we have received reports about the new nVidia drivers causing this behavior and rolling back to previous versions of the drivers has worked like a charm on most cases. Give that a go and let us know.
