So, I decided to accept delivery of my M17X since I have the 21 days to decide if I want to return it for the M18X. Honestly, this thing is amazing.

The build quality is exceptional. Every time I touch it it feels like... I don't know, you just have to experience it yourself. Just feels so solid! And it is beautiful to boot, exceptional laptop!

Runs cool to the touch, no noise, fast as hell, beautiful, what more could I want?

    Here are my specs btw:

Do I have really any reason to go for the M18X? If I'm enjoying this thing this much I'm wondering if the M18X will feel that much better. The main reasons for even making the switch would be the larger screen size and better speakers.

It's amazing isn't it? I still haven't sent mine in or had a tech come out to replace the orig Sandy Bridge mobo because I cant stand to be parted from it.

I'm in a similar situation Sticky. (not to be confused with a sticky situation)

I order the M17x because I got a big discount. The deal was too compelling. I had wanted to wait for the m18x, but I doubt that I would appreciate it 2k+ more  I have a bit of a wait, so the m18x will be available within my return period if it is said to be a life changing event. ;)

Definitely agree with you. I received mine yesterday and i am really impressed thus far. Having owned an M11x and a M15x briefly I really like what Alienware has done with the M17x. Enjoy your system!

I didn't get any kind of discount but I don't even care at this point, just love this thing.

I feel you, I'm also not sure if the M18X would even be worth the additional cash.

    16GB ram wow! nice system!

They need to get the new sandy bridge extreme processor in the M17x or the M14x...surprised Dell hasn't yet, other smaller places offer it! COME ON DELL!

If screen size is an issue, remember that you can always plug the 17 into a big tv with a HDMI cable. In terms of speakers, the speakers on m17x are a beast as is, don't think you'll appreciate the 18x upgrades enough to warrant spending that much extra money and having to wait for delivery on that one again.

Do the Extreme processors make that big of a difference? Is this something I could just upgrade on my own? The motherboard supports them right?

I just wish I could see and hold them side by side.

The M17X feels so large and solid, I really love the feeling.

I'm not talking as much about an external screen as to having a larger notebook screen. 18 inches sounds pretty glorious.

The wait would be a killer...

I have to agree with the OP. I'm not sure how much more expensive the M18x will be over the M17xR3 once its fully optioned, but I imagine its going to be quite a jump. I'd love to own the top dog, but I'm not sure I'd get any more enjoyment out of it (aside from the screen size) until a few years down the road when the 6970 is obsolete. BTW is this the infamous m3post.com Sticky? If so, what's up bro.

Does anyone think it's bad that I got the 460 over the 6970? I feel a bit let down by ordering mine with that..

460 is trades blows depending on the game with the mobility 5870 (1 year old)

    6970 is 50% faster than the 5870

Will there be anyway to upgrade it in the future? I got the 3D screen but I don't think that will affect my transfer of GPU's correct?

This is what I was wondering. Most people say the GPU will be upgradeable. If so, I don't need dual cards. I'll just keep upgrading to the best single available at that time.

I dont believe the 6970m works with the 120 hz screen.

Should I disappointed that I got the 460 instead of the 6970? All I really play is MMO's anyway.

Not if the 460 can handle them. Even if it can't, you can upgrade later.

If you wanted built in 3d, you didn't have a choice. The 460m should have no problem with most mmo's. At the moment, with the 120hz screen, you cannot swap in a 6970. You can however, put in a 485m, but without bios support (or something) you lose 3d.

I don't understand, the 6970 doesn't support the 3d screen? That is the 120hz screen you are talking about?

I wouldn't worry about getting the 460. It is still a very formidable card. You could always possibly upgrade to the 485 down the road.

Alright sounds good, is the 485m better then the 6970? Sorry for all the questions.

I believe the 485m is very slightly ahead of the 6970, but is significantly more expensive.

I too am blown away by the hardware capability of the R3, minus the sucky bluetooth that won't sync with my PS3 controller, and the various glitches here n there.
