Every few minutes my blu-ray drive will make a noise like it's trying to determine if a disc is in the drive. Is this normal? I looked for a driver on Dell's site but there wasn't one and a quick Google search didn't yield any results either. Any help/guidance will be appreciated! BTW, really enjoying being a part of this forum, seems like everyone is cordial and kind.

Yeah, same happens on dual layer drive. It's annoying the noise, at least we know it's still functioning.

Does it do this all the time? or only when you have disc (perhaps an old disc) in the drive? Mine is a DVD drive that pretty much runs totally silent. The only time it has acted up, similar to what you described, is when I inserted some old (5+ years) DVD data discs into the drive. With some of the discs, which had decent scratches/scuffs, it kept making noise even when I was no longer accessing the data/had closed all related folders.

All the time. It's almost like it's checking to make sure no discs are in the drive. I can live with it, I just wanted to see if others had experienced this as well.

I'm doing a clean install, and I was having this problem when I was installing AMD video drivers straight from Dell. The whole thing, just not the intel drivers from it. Got rid of them, stopped doing it.

If that's your problem, I can't say for sure, but it was mine.

Thanks for the helpful suggestion! I went ahead and grabbed my AMD drivers straight from the AMD website and not from Dells site.

To go a little more in depth about this issue, basically a program or driver is making windows poll the drive in a certain time interval. It's not normal, as it doesn't do it on my HDD ( this has been running for almost two years), and then now SSD. After spending hours on it, I notice installing catalyst in the order from the clean install guide was causing said problems. For the hell of it, I went back and fully installed the dell version once very thing else was installed and updated and I didn't notice the problem, although I'm not sure if I let set long enough.

Yeah that's why I was looking for a driver for the actually bluray drive. And to clarify what I was saying one of the first things I did was replace the OEM hard drive with an SSD drive. I did a clean install of Windows and installed the 14.4 Catalyst driver that I downloaded straight from AMD's site.

Are you saying that the AMD drivers are what caused the issue or just the way you installed them? I haven't tried installing the drivers from Dell and I really don't want to so I may just be living with it. I was hoping I could find updated firmware for the actual drive somewhere but so far no luck.

Once again, thanks for the info!

I think it may of been the order. It really didn't behave correctly in till windows was fully updated. Then I installed catalyst.

It's not normal, it's a driver issue. On my Alienware m17xR4 ever since I updated it to Windows 8 it kept doing that all the time, it was so annoying I had to disable it in device manager so it'd stop making the noise every 5 minutes or so. Then I reinstalled Windows 7 and the issue was gone, the drive finally functioning as it should.

Oddly enough, my Alienware 18 that's already on windows 8.1 from factory is not having the problem.

Its normal there are a lot of posts regarding the same thing, and a lot of people seem to have the same issue as you are experiencing.

What actually is happening is when you run any program that for some reason may want to check if there is a disc in your drive it will trigger that event.

its normal don't need to worry about it.

Thanks! I'm going to go with the two Alienware reps in that it is in fact normal.

I am having this problem as well, mine seems to be making that noise randomly even though the computer is idle though, in addition to opening programs (the latter of which I can live with). Sometimes if im sleeping, that noise will wake me up, and I'd have to get up and shut down the computer. Is there a ODD driver fix for this issue?
