    Greetings, all.

    AW17, Win8.1

After the last reboot, my BD drive vanished.

It shows up in device manager as: HL-DT-ST DVDRWBD CA40N with a "!" next to it.

I have removed the device and rebooted the laptop, with the same result.

Any suggestions before I call Dell?

The last update made before it vanished was the firmware update to my SSD.

Alienware Technical Support will just tell you to Restore windows using AlienRespawn. Updates probably corrupted something. Have you tried this?

    It's not a mechanical/hardware issue if it's showing up.

Restore the OS because of one device driver? YHGTBKM.

The message in the detail is:
Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Not because of one device, but because you're running Windows 8. And when something messes up in Windows 8, everything messes up.

I'd say there's more to it than it being some driver. But have you tried going through the device manager to uninstall and reinstall?

I think I have. I went into device manager and uninstalled it. At the next reboot, it re-detected it. Still not working, of course.

Well, F! it. I've been looking for an excuse to upgrade my mSATA SSD and 2.5" SSD and Newegg is having a sale. :|

That code could also mean the drive is faulty or the connection is bad.

You can also try deleting the upper and lower filters.

While I have no idea why it happened, I want to give kudos to AW tech support for fixing it in about 15 minutes with one call.

    All is well.
