Hey, ive just purchase brand new m17x r4 on ebay.. its very nice i really like it upgraded from G73 asus but the seller said its brand new and he sells it cuz he wanted to return and they wanted to take restocking fees.. but it still seems wiered..

there was very little cosmetic sign but i can defently see that the button screws (the 2 under the battery) were opened. and also it feels wierd he didnt send it with the nameplate.. because is name on it he says.. but maybe something about the refurb is writen there?!

it also feels like its over heating maybe you can please help me how i can check if its over heats and how i can know if its refurb..

    Thanks a lot, Barak :)

You need to contact Dell with the service tag and ask if it is or not. The name plate just has a name, nothing about being a refurb. The seller could have just told them it was having problems and return it wihout the restocking fee so I don't know about that one. Why do you think its over heating?

I would be very careful to make sure Dell give you a clear answer as to the status of the laptop. They remove name plates from refurb and no warranty units when they dispose of them to resellers.

Yeah, if you get a Dell outlet PC, it comes in a plain brown box and maybe the CDs, no AW mousepad or anything like that.

Honestly, I would be more concerned about why this guy is selling it on ebay in the first place than if it was a refurb. Were the restocking fees higher than what he will lose from the Ebay sale price and ebay fees?

    It just seems odd.

Perhaps he's actually making a profit by selling it on eBay. I know if I would have sold mine soon after purchasing it, I would have easily made $300-500 because of the deal I got.

he sold it to me little bit cheaper then on the price on the offical website.. but now i feel alittle bit worried.. because the 2 screws that opens the laptop panel seems to be opened before.. and the system really didnt turn on at all.. but maybe he replaced this with another computer to have this service tag..? and by this way he gave me refurb laptop maybe? or maybe he took our some hardware even thu i checked everything carefully but it seems to be allright...

the thing im afraid the most right now is that maybe he replaced the underpanel that have the sticker with the service tag.. maybe this laptop is still a refurb or something like that?

Thanks again guys for supporting and helping :)

You can check the computer's internal service tag (in the motherboard) by entering this command on an Elevated Command Prompt.

    C:\>wmic bios get serialnumber

This will clear that for you and also make sure you fill out the ownership transfer form to get it under your name.

Perhaps he's opened it up to clean out the fans. I've done it a few times and my system is only 3 months old. What do you mean it doesn't turn on? Does it not work?

well buyin over ebay just to save few quids, i dont think it worth(its me :D). Additionally you can check system service Tag from BIOS(press F2 at system start up literately at alien logo ). Or you can check S/T and express service code by goin to All programs > Alienautopsy > PC checkup.
After knowin Service tag or ESC(express service code) give a bell to Dell care and ask them to check this service tag log file. So if anything wrong with system then you will know straight way. As per my knowledge your system has been used (maybe seller change his mind over purchase as you have mentioned that 333 days left on warranty so he cant return product after 22 days, so he just sold it over Ebay).

Such a new model, I seriously doubt it's a refurb.

I would assume he did open it up and whatnot if it wasn't sealed int he box...And if there's 333 days left on the warranty, he likely used it a week or 2. If it's still in perfect shape, works well, and you got a good price, I'd say let it be.

i will let it be.. thx guys for help.
checked the service tag and it is fine and filled a request for a nameplate and its done aswell. i got it alittbit cheaper but the main reason for buying from ebay is that i needed it urgent and he had it immediatly. anyways the service tag is correct and i opened the laptop my self everything seems to be fine. ive also talked with dell and this is brand new so its not refurb :). thanks a lot for the help :)

I was seller of this laptop and this guy is a Scammer. I wish I would have found this thread out sooner. This guy opened and ebay case against me, citing that the laptop was damaged, to try to get money out of me and ebay told him to send the laptop back. Then the day before the deadline he cancels the case and leaves me negative feedback. Why would you keep a damaged laptop? Also the thing that pisses me off the most is I included my personal Alienware hat from my M17x r3 as a token of goodwill because he wanted it. Then the buyer claims he never received it and demands another one as part of the case even though it was not part of the auction.
Anyway here is the auction: Brand New Alienware M17x R4 Radeon 7970m 1920x1080 LED Intel Core i7 Ivy Bridge 884116047070 | eBay

And the buyers name is bar1468 Avoid at all costs! He also has several item not recieved claims, which is what he tried to do to me initially. Thank goodness for signature confirmation.

wow i sell on ebay and this crap happens. the bs snad claims and etc. sellers dont have much power on ebay anymore like back then. seller fee higher and higher, snad claims buyer wins 98% of the time, cant leave negative and etc. if this is true i have no respect for the op and imo does not belong here. Only reason why i still sell is the high volume of traffic ebay gets. nobody can really beat them. craigslist is limited and has a bunch of lowballers and scammers, and can you believe scammrrs on craigslist text now! its soo annoying...

you know for service tag issues, when you actually trying to check your warranty status on the Dell site, the site usually automatically scans your hardware and give you the service tag number.
then you can check whether it matched the bottom cover number or not.

imo it didn't matter if the laptop been opened up before, that won't void the warranty.
the only thing you have to watch out is whether what the seller promised actually matched whats under the hood, and this can easily be checked from the device manager or bios.

I thought I would mention I totally agree with your post. Thankfully, I haven't ran into any totally unreasonable people (knock on wood). Then, on top of that, Paypal can jerk you around however they want. About a year after I opened my Paypal account, they placed restrictions on me so that I could not withdrawal funds until 2 weeks after the sale. Thanks, Paypal, sometimes I need part of that to ship the item... The reason for restrictions? I was withdrawing "inconsistently."
