Hi, I just received my brand new Alienware M17xR4 yesterday and on starting up, it started to produce intermittent high pitched screeching sound.

    The specs are i7 3630, 16gb, 750 gb 7200, radeon 7970

I read multiple posts and receive different opinions some from fans, some from GPU, some from CPU, some from HDD, some from transistors etc etc etc.

I'm not sure which one is mine.

I can guarentee definitely not the fan because the sound is different.

It happens almost once every few seconds when running whatever program and it only lasts for like 0.1 - 0.5 seconds (yes it only last a very short while, not even a full second)

It sound like eee, eee, and it tends to occur when I open any programs, or run any programs, or even starting up windows. Tt doesn't occur when it is shut off, and it doesn't matter whether the adapter is connected or not

The laptop feels fine however, and I don't really want to bother contacting Dell because from what I've heard, they are not much of a help

Please advise what might be the problem. If it is serious, I'll just send this machine back for a full refund and get something else cheaper and at least, more reliable

    Thanks

Well, this sounds like the slot loading DVD drive, which if it is, I believe it is normal. (My blu-ray does it, plus I think there was an older thread about this)

But I have nothing in the DVD drive. Is that even possible?

another thing is that the sound is mostly coming from the left. as far as i can tell the slot dvd is on the right. maybe i should upload a video when possible...

Well, if it is coming from the left side, it could be your hard disk making the sound.

I would upload a video when you have the chance.

I used have the exact same problem it happens just under your left hand, i think its the hard drive, because i took mine out and re-set back in place the sound hasn't happened again.

Also, Do some Alienware have only 2 RAM slots? I have the i7-3610 QM which i thought was a quad-core and under the keyboard there is a sticker saying only quad core laptops have 4 RAM slots.

    ^^^^
No, you have the four RAM slots. The other two require some disassembly to get to.

nope didn't work. i took out the HDD and mount it back but that "rat screeching" sound is still there. it's only apparent when the HDD is hard at work... i'll just wait and see what happens. if anyone else have the same problem do post it here to see what things can be done

Have you tried taking the hard drive out and running the laptop without a HDD? Does it make a sound then? Might be the HDD sound, its the loudest component at idle for me, since my main boot drive is a SSD.

You might think your R4 feels fine, but I bet she doesn't like the way your touching her.
