Broken Power cable

Hi all,

I have an issue with my M17x-R1. The cable which attaches the power button (on the hinge cover/touch panel) is broken. I searched around on the internet, but I cannot find a replacement. A lot of hinge covers are offered, but these are without the cable.

Does anybody know if there's a place where I can get a replacement or does anybody know if the cable is a standard one which I could get from another laptop?

I know i was looking for one of those when i thaught i broke one but turned out that a CMOS removal did the trick.
Try to google the refference maybe you'll find something.
I can't find the thread where i posted the exact reff.
Anyway be careful if you find one as there are plenty and the difference is the wires the ribbon holds,you'll need the one with 16 wires not 12/8 or 6.
Is it really broken? can you post a picture?

I'm sure either the cable of the connector to the hinge is broken. My power button stopped working when my connector got detached. When I manually put the cable into the connector the laptop would power on etc. Problem for me was that I could no longer attach the cable in a way in which it would stay in after assembling the hinge. Right now the power button stopped working even when I manually make sure the ribbon is connected correctly.

The hinge isn't a problem, those are readily available at ebay.

I removed the ribbon from the laptop, the exact reference is :

HAMBURG-W E235863 AWM 20798 80C 60C VW-1

Problem is that it seems to be a more or less general reference. The ribbons are available here ( http://www.nartik.com/hamburgw-e235863-20798-7x136-p-14297.html). However, they are different sizes and perhaps also have different functionalities (like the number of wires).

I will see if I can get more info.

Thinking it might be it, would be willing to try. Seller does not ship to Europe though, have requested him to make an exception.

 

What you would have to find is a ribbon with that refference and the same number of wires,messure yours for the lenght(longer is cool,shorter would be a problem).
Those ribbbons don't break that easy,their plugs do and also seating it a little bit to the left or right would keep it from making a good contact(in that case you'll have to remove the CMOS batt and drain the power out of your laptop without the battery in or charger)

Ok, both the ribbon cable from ebay and a new hinge are coming my way. Will update this thread when I know more.

 

The ribbon in your eBay link is not the good one you'll need a 16 pin(wires) one if that's the one you bought.
Can you post some photos of your ribbon,different angles,close-ups?

The ebay one looks a lot like the one I have. It might not work but for that price I'm willing to try. Highly annoying that most other places where these cables are available do not include info on the number of pins.

I also have a spare m11x lying around at the moment. Might open it up to see if it uses the same cable.

What do you mean short? Broke or misseated? If you just misseated and the lights won't turn on just do a power drain.

 

No, unfortunately the missus' laptop screen is knackered, was trying to sort it, when I reattached the cable whilst the battery was in, fried the cable with a flash or fire and smoke, and now need to find a replacement.

the ribbon consists only in cables in a plastic ribbon there's nothing that can burn it,if it didn't melt and changed shape you can still use it, just wash it a little with some alcohol. hope you didn't fry anything on the board.

Some can be found online, just. be sure to pick the ones with 16pins and 0,8cm of width.

Ah! you also answered me here as well. so you know my situation for the R2 owners thread. could you make a search for me please and post a link from ebay maybe? i couldnt find anything..

by the way i also tried a spare hinge cover i have and it also doesnt work. so its for sure the cable or the motherboard..
