My friend offered me his M17X r4 with no display, and after I checked its 100% that his gpu is fried, the unit worth 139usd. My question is, is m17x r4 still worth the effort to build? Does gtx 1080 zotac is that rare to get?
How much the estimated cost for fully upgraded m17x r4 with 1060 and 2930xm?

1080 will not work at stock levels.
R4 should be using ivy bridge not sandy -

As I am using one as my main machine, I'd say it's worth building it up again.
A little bit of fan boying hehe
Btw. R4 can also run Sandy Bridge. -

If you mean while wise, the value proposition isn't really there IMO unless you find a very cheap MXM card.
If you mean as a fun little project go for it!
However, it does seem that that is a R3 unit due to it's Sandy CPU, thought the Dell Specifications page does seem to indicate that sandy CPU's were sold with it.
I would enter your model number (usually a sticker on/under the bottom cover or under the battery bay) and see if its a R4 -
Does, the r1 case is compatible with the r4 variant?. Since r1 cases are quite scarce in my country -
17 r1 is a redesign, so no not even close for the shell.
The system should be the same for the limits though, pretty sure 2133mhz ram wouldn't be an issue either -

17 R1 is a completely different board/daughtboards/literally everything
I want to say 2133 works in the R4 but I can't give any confirmation -
