Since Sandybridge is around the corner should I hold off on purchasing a 920xm in hopes there will be a significant price drop or just get it now? Right now QS/ES 920xms are $420 on ebay, wondering how low it would drop if at all. Thanks.

On the desktop end we're not predicting a drop any time soon. Some even speculate a price hike due to supply and demand.

420$ is a good price IMO. I wouldn't count on significant price drops here and grab one now.

Sandy Bridge is going to use a completely different socket - even for laptops. I wouldn't expect prices of the current i7 processors to drop much, if at all. The demand for them will remain high.

^^Exactly, Sandy Bridge isn't here to replace the i7 outright.

I agree....920XM remains one of the most sort after chip, because of the unlock and turbo factors and TDP/TDC settings..... and compared to 940XM, 920XM is cheap!!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully shirely from ebay doesnt see this post.

It won't be so sought after SB. Even if they're not direct competitors, those with i7 notebooks may opt to sell them and move on to cheaper SB's that offer greater performance without the use of 3rd party software. IMO, $400 is too expensive for an ES 920xm.

Alienware outlet @ ebay sold many of those for $200 usd some days ago...
I dont expect the 920xm to go down for a while, at least 2-3 months...

I just installed my "OEM" 920xm I purchased from laptops.4.less which I payed $525 for, only because it was suppose to be an OEM but what do you know, upon loading up HWiNFO I find it is really an engineering sample.

BRAND NEW Intel Core i7 920XM 3.2GHZ Turbo SLBLW OEM - eBay (item 270687570250 end time Jan-05-11 17:52:48 PST)

That pisses me off, it was a pita installing that thing. I wanted an OEM to avoid any throttling issues that may or may not exist with QS chips. I told him I'd only accept it for $145 refund ($380 total).

That's odd. You should have been able to identify it as an ES chip right from the markings on the chip before even installing it.

Kindly run CPU-Z and post the pic here, and a pic of the RAW chip, we will like to see the marking SLBW...

I'm not taking the chip out just to take a pic of it. I am 100% certain it has the SLBLW branding. If you look at the ebay listing, click full description then click the photo the seller posted, that is a photo of the chip inside my R2. He told me it has the SLBLW branding so thought it was OEM. So it seems you can't even buy an OEM from ebay without knowing if it is really an OEM or QS/ES chip anymore.

OUCH, I almost bought that one.
While I was hemming-n-hawing I saw that you purchased it and said "well at least someone who will appreciate it got it"

I then bought one off of these forums and all is peachy... until I saw your post.
Well, as long as he gives you the partial refund you should be OK

Sorry to hear about it though.
