Just talked to a Dell Tech dude and he confirmed that the 6970m can be purchased separate, for a price of $414.99. Part number is V9XKH. Haven´t seen any thread with this subject so i posted it so you guys know. Also the 1080p screen for the R3 can be purchased separate, but with a price of $650, sick sick.
Anyway, ordered a 6970m so i can replace and sell the 6870m and put in the new one.

If that's the case why not just purchase the Nvidia 3D Vision configuration which includes the 120hz screen and sell the 460M. Also, how much is the 6870 going for? The 6970 upgrade is $250 - $415 to buy seperate = $165 difference. Can you get more than this to make it worth your while?

You should buy two 6970's and then buy an R2 and then Crossfire them, and then get a mod to get your fans running, and then buy a laptop cooler to keep your laptop from burning your pants off or tabletop, and then buy a few games like Crysis 2 or Shogun 2, and then start playing a few games after your benchmarks of course.

The thing is that here in Sweden, the R3 with base parts costs 3100 dollars, and the R3 with 3D bundle costs nearly 4500 dollars. By buying the base R3 and the 6970m/1080p screen And a blueray, you would actually make a profit. Anyways , created this thread to tell you guys what the price was at the moment. Will ask an tech tomorrow about the 6870m´s price.

Don't forget to buy a power supply of at least 350w to power that thing

This is where high end laptops are reaching limits and why single gpu's are entering the scene again - it's all about power

Just called on this and spoke to the US premium support team, they have a part number and the 6970m listed in their system but said it's not available for a single sell part yet. The guy is supposedly gonna call me when it is.

Erm idk where you've been but the 6970 mobility draws 85 watts at max. The 240 watt provided with the R2 will be ample for CF 6970 mobilities.

Wow Dell's prices are cheaper than MXM upgrade.com. A lot cheaper. Once I get the cash (a few more months) I'm picking up 2 for my R2.

Dell charges less, because they overcharge for other things, like $70 for the $35 Wifi chip, as well as the LCD and RAM prices.

    It's an illusion of savings.

Provided that you dont overclock you cpu. Because base 45w(extreme cpu)+85+85=215, not to mention the screen, ram, etc.

Then again, running 6970CF at stock would still be a beastly setup.

i think you'll find it's a bit more than 85w, but either way you are pushing limits which is not a good idea in a laptop, just because it says 240w does not mean you will be fine up to 240w, in my old system it used to get very hot with gpu's running at 90c, you couldn't touch the power supply it was so hot.

Highly overclocked and overvolted 5870's draw more than 85 watts and people here aren't having issues.

Geoffxx, don't forget that the R3 like the previous models use Dell proprietary chargers and as of today I don't know of a way to bypass that chip. I wanted the same thing for my R1.
Also the 240W PSU is capable to provide more.

So if we swapped out the 460m for the 6970, will we still be able to utilize the 120Hz screen? Don't care about losing 3D.

I should be able to let ya know in the next week or so. The tech I dealt with when they agreed to swap my card spoke to a level 2 engineer that said there is nothing stopping the 6970m being used with the 120hz panel. That tells me Dell is trying to push the Nvidia 3D kit and may offer the 6970m+120hz sometime in the future.

I'm sure there is simply a contract in place, with Nvidia, which prevents the selling of AMD's GPU with the 120Hz screen.

Hopefully the deal is only for timed exclusivity.

Yes and no, there's been 1 person that got it running but it still doesn't work completely right. I'd just wait as TheWiz is working on implementing bios support for the 6970m.

Well, I called Dell today to place an order for a R3, the rep said he cannot add the 6970 + 120hz option. he has me on hold for 10 minutes to check that. wonder if I should get the 460 for now and upgrade to a 6970 later or go with a 6970 and replace the screen later. 120hz screen + 6970 sounds great

The screen costs a good deal more than the 6970M. It's much wiser, to upgrade the GPU later

Post #1 says the 1080p screen is going for $650.

Assuming that's just the 60Hz, it may be quite expensive.

And no rep will sell you the 120Hz package with the 6970M, as they're probably contractually obligated to deny this request.

I'm resurrecting this because I am curious about the same thing. Anyone have any luck getting a 6970m and heat sink from Dell?

    Part numbers?

Were they able to update your configuration on their database (which would allow you to sell your original GPU without worry about the warranty not being valid for replacement)?

The Dell 6970m costs the $250 PLUS the cost of the Dell GTX 460m.

The GTX 460m costs ~$300 from elsewhere. The Dell one will cost more.

So alone, the 6970m from Dell should cost $250+$300+Dell profit margin.

I contacted them and they said ~$600.

EDIT: didn't read the OP. good to know
