I won't lie; I'm flat out terrible at making large purchases. I finally pulled the trigger on an M17x r2 from the Dell Outlet, and am looking for some opinions on the specs and price.

OS : Windows 7 Home Premium
    Processor : i7-720QM
    Display : 1920x1200 RGB LED
    Memory : 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM 1333 MHz (2 DIMMs)
Hard Drive : TWO 500 GB SATA (7200 RPM)
GPU : Crossfire 1GB ATI Radeon Mobility HD 5870
    Color : Lunar Silver

    Total : $1620 (Tax + Shipping Included)

Do you think I made the right decision? Any advice as a new owner of an M17x? I have a three week period to return it for a full refund so what problems should I look for, and what tests should I run?

That seems like an amazing deal to me. I'd be happy with that, especially considering the R3 coming out may not be as powerful as the R2.

I spent 1200 more for 8 gigs, 285sli, Red color instead of silver, and Bluray. I was very apprehensive about the purchase, and was doubting whether I made the right choice...then the laptop came in the mail, wow...Let me tell you something, this is the nicest piece of electronics that I have ever purchased, it's a thing of beauty, you will not be disappointed, trust me. Keep that sucker.

I only went with a one year warranty when I made the purchase, but from what I've read, most people recommend at least two, even three, years of warranty coverage. Does anybody have any advice on this? If I should upgrade, how much time do I have to make the choice?

Although it is much cheaper to get the warrantly when ordering the CP, you can order it anytime you wish before your 1 year is up. I heard that it may be cheaper to order if before the 21 day old threshold too.

I only ordered a 1 year warranty and will plan on upgrading it around next nov/dec with some pointers others listed in this forum.

Word of advice, always try to talk dell down in price..that's something I didn't do when ordering my computer...

I ordered a 3 year complete care 2 days after my M17x was delivered, it cost me $775, plus they gave me a $75 gift card, so basically $700.

I had negotiated a good price, and got a bonus incentive of $100 for keeping the system...So you may have more wiggle room on pricing for that, truthfully, I think I had a little more room, but was tired of haggling with the rep about pricing, I had put them through enough upon purchase.

I did the samething you did, two days after I got my 17x I upgraded from a 1 year standard to a 3 year complete care. They quoted me 775 at first but I told them I was under the 21 day buy back and they lowerd it to 270 with the $75 gift card. If your still under your 21 days call them back and get them to fix it, could save you some nice cash.

I went from the 1 year to the 3 years 1 day before it got delivered and they just charged me the difference of what was advertised when I built it. Either way, if it within the 21 days, should just be the difference.
