if your going to spend 300, im sure you can get a 675MX for around the same price, one just sold i believe on the NBR marketplace for that much. A 675mx will easily beat a 6970m also. Have you looked at different cards? As for what parts you need im not sure.

Yes but going from AMD to nVIDIA will require the op to buy a heatsink too. They're not the same.

Depending on budget it still might be worth it. OP, that is all you will need. The heatsinks should be the exact same. Make sure you have the thermal pads for the new card and some good thermal paste.

I bought my 6990m for $215 a few weeks ago... just keep looking on forums and ebay etc for better prices. If it's your day to day system you can always buy a 6870 and use it until you find a good deal on a better card then resell it.

True but i thought it was worth mentioning this in case the op decides to buy a nVIDIA card.

The extra $100 are definitely worth the money for the 6990, it's an amazing card.

Wait, so if I bought the 675MX, would I be able to use it without replacing anything else other than the thermal pads and paste?

    Thanks for the replies!

From what I was to understand, yeah, the heatsinks were SUPPOSED to have been identical and universal to any upgrade. Also, yes, the 675MX is a good bit faster than the 6990M at stock. However the real performance is gained after you overclock. :3

Last bit, the 6970M I have in my R2 is directly from an R3 and I have to honestly say that it's NOT worth the $300 price tag in the slightest. I sold one for around $250 and that was around last year this time. At best they're worth $200.

You might be able to talk to Mythlogic and see what they can do for ya. Malibal might sell you one too, but I'm not sure. I know Mythlogic sells the individual GPUs though, so you might try them first.

I went to the mythlogic website now, but I couldn't find the link to buying the GPU. Where is it?

    Thanks!

For 435 USD you can get a 7970 that is roughly 180% performance.

I checked with them now, they dont have a 7970m, but they have a 675mx for 385$.

But the question is that, would it be compatible with my alienware m17x r3?
I don't want to buy it if I cant even use it...
