Hey guys,
So I own an Alienware 17. I was trying to look at some photos one night and every time I clicked on a photo Windows Photo Viewer would pop up and then COM Surrogate has stopped working error would pop up. I noticed that when I switched to my NVIDIA card I no longer had this problem. I have done almost a weeks worth of looking through the internet and going through forums trying to find a fix. None of which have worked. Today I decided to go through the Intel website to update my Intel driver but even after the update the error still happens. Is this a bug that Intel has still yet to work out? The reason I am asking is because the oldest forum threads on any site that I can find date back to early to mid 2012 and have no fixes other than rolling back the driver to an older one. Any new info on this would be great. Thanks!

Your not suppose to update intel graphics card anyway. I've hd many issues before by doing this. -
What's the problem with updating Intel's graphics card? I suppose you'd be the same person that would tell me.not to update my NVIDIA card past the driver that Dell recommends either. See the problem with Dell and Alienware is that half the time even their techs don't know what they are talking about. I updated the driver because I found out it was almost 8 months out of date. nothing went wrong and everything acts the same if not better now when I'm connected to that graphics card, aside from the COM Surrogate error.
@ amitvig 22 Thanks for helping me out I'll be looking forward to hearing back from you if you find the fix.
Is there anyone else out there that feels like I shouldn't have updated my Intel card? If so why?
Also should I do a clean install just because I updated the Intel driver and don't want to roll it back? -

No, you can update the Nvidia card fine. But intel no. These drivers are totally different then Nivida. But since you insulted my intelligence about updating drivers I will not be helping you anymore good day. One last thing. Of course if you clean install with the older driver INTEL driver it will be fine. Good Day. -
Have you got nero on your system by any chance? Last time I saw this error message it was related to nero.
-
No I actually don't have Nero installed at all.
@Hackintoshihope I never insulted your intelligence. You must work for Dell if you were offended. Updating the Intel graphics driver is the same thing as updating any other graphics driver. Not sure why you got so upset but you really weren't helping to begin with. -

No it is not. But you will soon find this out. You are stubborn I'll give you that. Also the funny thing is if I worked for dell why would I overclock my system? Anyway hope your problem gets fixed the next time the universe gives birth. Quit frankly if a rollback fixes this wouldn't one deduce that the update made something go wrong. Man I would.

I never said the update would fix it and I never said the update caused the problem. This is an Intel issue plain and simple. I tried something out. You explain to me why the Intel driver is so different since you are so certain about it. Plus I thought you were one to keep everything up to date including BIOS. What makes this one driver so different? You obviously have your strong opinions on how someone should update and maintain their system. Also, overclocking your system has nothing to do with this topic. I poked at Dell and not you but you took offense to it anyway.

Did you see the link I provided. Yes it's an intel issue with the driver you installed the reason it's different is because in the dell drivers there are certain bits of code unique to our motherboards that the oem Intel drivers do not have. This causing issues like the one you are experiencing. Yes I will keep my system up to date as long as I have full functionality. Such as the bios updates etc. But this update does not include what the dell driver does, this causing issues. -
I never stated that the driver I installed caused the problem. The stock driver that was shipped with the machine had the problem to start off with. I only updated to see if it would fix the problem.

Now it makes sense. -
For sanity sake, try this and see if it works.
Uninstall what ever driver you have for Intel and Nvidia. Uninstall Nvidia first, use driver cleaner for Nvidia. Then uninstall Intel drivers.
After a safe reboot install the Intel drivers that Dell recommends and use it for a while view pics and see if the problem persists. This will ensure which of the display drivers was causing the issue. If it's not too much you can try it and get back with results -
Honestly guys I'm just going to our eform a clean install. I've been having a problem even before this problem where my computer will not boot into windows after losing in. I'm just curious if I should buy an SSD now. I can get a 750GB Samsung. I just don't know if it will cause anymore headaches for me or solve my problems. what do you think?
-
A clean install should ideally get rid of the issue in my opinion. ! keep us posted.
-
Will do....I got all the drivers from Dell ready for me when I get home. Any advice on install order for the drivers?

OK guys the clean install is done and the com surrogate error is gone. However I have started a new thread on a problem I've been experiencing for about 3 weeks now regarding windows welcome screen hanging up and or black screen appearing after login. it already happened to me once after I installed alien respawn. it's all explained in the new thread.
