To remove it from my original full tread about my update I started a new tread.
Trying to make my Alien 17 r2 run with my new 940XM processor.
Ive reinstalled the CPU so many times no it starts to wear out connectors etc.
It heats up very fast.
I find that it heats to 98 deg C just installing windows update. (HWinfo64 running at the same time)
I also find that my max power during that hits 65 W and my processor barely hitting 68%.
Shouldnt this be a 55W max CPU?
Is it anywhere i should reduce my CPU voltage in BIOS to make the effect go down or should this happen automatically?
Hopefully it can help me.
My next step would be to see if it overheats with Turbo disabled.

Mine tops out at around 80c under load. Something is definetly wrong with your setup. If you need any Bios info shoot me a PM.

Did you order a ES part?
-
I ordered it as a QS part from upgrademonkey.
Turned of the turbo and overclocked it 5% in bios not tampering with voltages.
Now it hits max 54W at 100%
Clocking as expected about 2.25 MHz (overclocked and no turbo)
Keeping my max temp in the CPU to 90 deg C (core 0)
Tested with 3D vantage to 13000 CPU score. (about 2000 higher than my turboed overclocked 720)
This is the highest speed so far that ive got on the CPU. -
anyone able to tell me if 68 W max with turbo and 50 W without (no overclocking at all) could be expected on the 940XM when running 3D mark advantage?
I get away enough heat when 54 watts. (overclocked without turbo)
So if the chip is supposed to have 55 Watts i have OK cooling. -
How are you calculating CPU Wattage?

HWinfo states my 940 hit 69.902 watts during a 3dMark Vantage run.
-
Havent run 3D vantage for a while since it nearly stalls and hits full temp fast.
Ill do it again later with the turbo and verify full effect of CPU.
I will try to again put new paste on it when i get my GPU, since they provide me with new paste. (ive used all now)
Can my crappy GPU affect my CPU in tests to make it run faster to compensate?
The GPU by the way takes it time.
As if they slow it down on purpose taking 1-2 days in each country. -
I ordered a 940xm qs from upgrademonkey once upon time. Reinstalled/reseating 5-6 times and shipped back to them in China. They gave me my money back, so all was well. They told me my computer couldn't handle the temperatures, but my fans were maxed out at 100% and my r2 couldn't stay on.
:[ -
Yes this is the way it seems to operate.
I can see all temperatures in HWinfo64.
Eventually all goes to above 90 but the first rockets up.
Disabling the turbo function makes me avoid the extreme temperature.
Even running fans 100% from start.
Oddly enough there are plenty folks out there that even can overclock their 940, i cant even run it normally. Not even close.
Sending this from norway makes this a lot more work for me to send back.
Upgrademonkey just tells me basically the same as they tell you.
Have you swapped later? -
Just did 4 different tests now with my 940. Almost freezing the room. (12 degC)
This time my turboed 940QS scored almost the same as when i OC 5% the 940 without turbo. 13400 vs 13200 respectively.
Temperature as low as 73 deg C in the latter test.
With turbo it ended up at 97 deg and had speed of as low as 900 MHz when hot keeping performance down. Two cores had high temp. Core 2 @ 95 and core 0 @ 97. The same two has had temp problems each time I mounted it.
Without turbo but OC'ed i managed 51,6 Watts. With turbo it peaks at 68 watts.
Thought id go visual.
First picture 5% OC without turbo.
The second no OC and W/ turbo.
Also have the graphs for all CPU temps, effect, speed and usage.
Did actually two equal tests with 5% OC wo Turbo, and one where i increased the CPU voltage 75mV. (no effect on performance, just a litle hotter)
This with upgrademonkeys own heat compound delivered with the CPU.
First paste i used my first 4 times mounting it was the Cooler Master'High performance Thermal Compound, same results but dont have the same graphs and screenshots.
Will do more when i get the compound to be used on the GPU. -
And then i tried the Compound from GPU. Diamond.
You bet it helped.
Ive tried 2 different other, putting it on differently, one of them delivered together with the CPU, another tested to be great, but noone did the job.
Now its operating at 80 degC OC'ed to 5% in BIOS with the turbo.
For anyone upgrading CPU. If you try a couple of times with another brand and it dont work, go for the DIAMOND. -

Also did you tighten it down well? pressure makes a world of a difference.
Can you run a CPU test like Prime95 and log it in hwinfo into a nice csv file? follow the instructions in the H-S testing thread if you don't know how to log in hwinfo. post the file so i can take a look. good luck -

Just for Information sake:
R2 bios will set 920/940XM@ 62W and not 55W. Also, the multiplier for 4 cores will be set @24x for the 920xm and 25x for the 940xm, (instead of 15x / 16x on 4 cores). This is the way XM works on our R2.
About the repaste you have done.... how much thermal paste did you use? the ammount has to be really small, lay the paste on the cpu lenght, just a thin line and don't spread it, let the heatsink do the job for you. Result will be much better if you do so. -

don't go too small if anything a hair more is better. I personally find it surprices on how much ICD you actually needs
CPU 940 overheat.
