I have been in debate lately on wether or not to do this mod. I really want those cooler temps but im not sure I am brave enough to take on this mod. I have overclocked my R2 as far as I can with TS and I do a lot of rendering for school. So I use my comp at my desk with a zalman laptop cooler and have also done a repaste. When I render an image which can easily take 5-6 hours I have TS on top and I watch the temps constantly while rendering. The rendering uses the cpu basically as much as wprime does. Then while keeping the temps at 90 degrees and below I use a multiplyer of x20-x21 and the cpu runs at about 2.5Ghz on all cores.
Now any extra speed I could get out of my 940x will make a big difference in rendering times however heat is holding me back.
On a side not I have been having some random FPS drops in my games so I called dell and after running some 3Dmark tests and having them see the FPS drops they decided to replace my MB, Ram, HD, as well as video cards. I also decided to upgrade to crossfire 5870's. So they are still replacing my 285's but are not putting them in the system.
So my question is should I take on the retention mod for the cpu when I replace the video cards to get those lower temps out of the cpu. Or is it to much to handle. I get pretty nervous when pulling my comp apart but I had no trouble doing the repaste.

Patience is key.
Don't hurry,do it slowly, watch the teardown videos carefully and you should be fine. -
I have been reading a little about using washers to be on the safe side. Does this method still have similar results. Also any tips for testing the sytem while its open and pulled apart
