Hi guys after noticing one of my fans at the back of my M17x was not blowing out air and the laptop was getting rather hot, I decided to check the temps, and it seems idling my CPU is running at 71-94oC , I have ordered a coolmaster u3 cooling mat just now to try bring the temp down, do you guys have any other suggestions ? earlier I took the back cover off to see if there was a dust build up clogging a fan, I could not see this at all, any ideas guys ? would be much appreciated thanks.

check to see if the fan is correctly plugged in. Although I think if it wasn't your laptop wouldn't even turn on. Worst comes to worst I would send it back if it's still under warranty, especially if there are no noticeable faults. You could also try calling the dell support and ask them if they know what's going on.

Take the fans off (if you know how to) and blow them both out with a can of air. Do the same for the heatsink. If you take out the fans you should have enough room to blow thru the fins of the heatsink with the air can tube without removing the heatsinks. Do your fans run at all? They should cycle on once in a while. If not, then something is wrong with the fans, or the MB or BIOS that controls them. If the fans work, and you clean them and the heatsinks out, and your temps are still high (70C or more), then you may need to repaste the heatsinks.

one of the fans seems to work the other does not appear to its the one on the left hand side while using it, one on right side is working fine and that is why i think my GPU is staying around 60-70 while gaming, I think I will give order some paste then to try it, am i still under warranty if i attempt to clean fans and repaste the heat sink ? thanks for the quick response christo and radj, I am scared to use it atm but no other choice really,

is the left hand side where the CPU is ?

Cleaning the fans will not void your warranty. Repasting shouldn't but you should not tell Dell or any techs they send out that you repasted the heatsinks. As far as which fan is which, it depends on which m17x version you have. The R1's and R2's CPU fan is the center one, the R3's and R4's is on the left. I would download a fan control app for your m17x and see if you can make the CPU fan cycle on manually. If it doesn't come one, then definitely call Alienware and get a new CPU fan. It's a warranty item so they will want to send a technician out to install it.
