I need to upgrade my gpu and cpu to finish my upgrades on my m17x-r2, I know that the gpu has to be the mxm 3.0 to fit the gpu slots. I am probably going the 920xm route because it is cheaper, but my question is if the socket for the 920xm is the same for all 920xm cpu's or if I need to find one with a specific socket type to fit my motherboard?

As long as it's an Intel 920XM, aka, Clarksfield-type CPU, you'll be good. The Intel CPUs aren't notebook brand specific. Whilst a 920XM is markedly different from a 3920XM (Clarksfield vs Ivy Bridge), all 1st gen 920XMs were built the same.

Radji is completely right on this, all you need to make sure is that it's a clarksfield and not any of the newest ones or it won't work.

Note that if you OC that CPU it draws tons of power so if you look to upgrade your GPU's you might not have enough power.
