No, A 7.1 system will not work, but a 5.1 system will. The megalodons are horrible and not worth the money at all. Only thing going for them is they are comfortable and directional sounds are pretty good. The bad they have horrendous sound leakage and very low volume.

Whatever solution you choose, avoid the IDT audio system. The 5.1 doesn't work for squat regardless of what drivers are used with it. I had to go with a Zalman USB sound card in the end to resolve it.

Try and use the HDMI out to a receiver if possible.

I'd highly recommend the Logitech G35s if you're looking for a gaming headset. Fantastic 7.1 surround sound, comfortable, good isolation, and reasonably priced.

I think the OP meant 7.1 speakers, not headsets and whatnot... Depending on which model of Alienware, I know the M17x and M18x comes with the SPDIF port and adapter if you can find a system that has that input..

SPDIF has a maximum of 5.1

The HDMI out supports 7.1, in Windows at least.

I recommend the G35's(virtual), HPA2/HPX(True 5.1) if you can find them HPA2 is the better choice from LVNeptunes usage he says the cable included with the HPX doesn't raise the bass at all not a problem with the amp cable that is with the HPA2 head shaking bass the headsets are identical just the cable options are different.

I have the HPA2, the bass is wonderful. Overall pretty good set of headphones.
