Unfortunately most Alienwares sold at retail stores are sold preconfigured, and they rarely have the top end specifications. You could try Best Buy or Fry's as they are mostly on the West Coast. Some resellers also will customize Alienware laptops, but it's generally better to customize directly from Dell. Only other way is to buy used in Marketplace or eBay, though eBay ones are typically overpriced.

I agree with Tsunade_Hime. If you wanna see what the machine looks like they sometimes have them at best buy or fry's like he said, but I would buy from online so you can get the system that is configured for your needs and not some crappy base model. Go big or go home right? :p

    Just a small advice.

You will not see a massive Performance difference between R2 and R4 unless you go for a really top spec R4. If you are going for 770M, why not just get 680M and put it in R2 ?

Also you can put 16GB ram in R2, all that will save you around $1300

Also, do not buy in retail shop, they have their prices bumped up to cover the costs to run the store, the best deal can be found online.

We are talking about $200-500 margin ripp-off.

On your place i would take a look on outlet machines, take your time on this one, you can get really bad @$$ Alien for half the price, and again, if you are not going for a top spec R4/R5 or M18xR2 you will not see a massive jump from R2 ( considering you could upgrade R2 to 680M easy and 16GB of ram )

Some people tend to really need A LOT of Ram and CPU power for Music and Video, if you really need this, then go for topSpec M17xR4.

If you end up on R4 with 3610QM and 770M then i would say Stay with R2 and just upgrade ram and memory, save the money, it would not be worth it.....

    just my 5 cents... :D

    Good Luck !

You don't need soldering to install an MXM 3.0b card, sometimes you will need to modify the heatsink or buy a new one.

It's always better to buy straight from DELL. You get outstanding support in case anything happens.
