it seems that some of us with the R3 with the 460/3d kit are haing ing issues with frame rates that drop to a crawl. and some BSOD. i know that i have this issue with a few games like SC2 and Mass effect 2 to name 2. i have tried all of the driver sugestions listed on the forum.....my question is this...is anyone NOT having issues? if so, what have you done or not done?

I'm not having BSOD issues, but I am having frame issues. I'm starting to think it's the CPU though.

my 6870 is also getting hangs and crashed while playing civ 5

no frame issues to report. just that it has hanged 3 times already while playing other games as well.

its getting rather tiring to see an alienware with this kind of problems...

I just canceled my order, I think I'm going to wait for the 6970 to come out, hopefully that'll be alot stronger.

I have yet to have any issues with mine at all. I have been able to play any game I have installed. I've even been able to play Metro 2033 at decent settings in 3D none the less. I'm using mine as a dual monitor setup on extended desktop right now and have yet to have a single issue. What drivers are you using?

I pretty much have the same specs as Dane without any problems (everything stock), Ive used my Plasma TV as an external monitor just messing around for a bit. No problems with hangs, bsod, fps drops or anything... Running pretty solid in games / 3D on in games.

I even plugged my Cable/DVR box into it for fun and it works haha.

Im running the 460m with no problems Here, I have installed Burnout/portal/css/TF2/DoWII/Left4Dead 2/Gary's Mod/UT3. I play max settings with FPS smooth as butter in 3d.

Im running my machine completely stock, no messing with drivers, did not do a clean install of the OS. Ive notice a short hiccup in FPS as turbo kicks in, but its short.

Thing to note, disable Nvidia laser sight and your fps will jump way up. I set my to be controlled with a hotkey so i can disable/enable in mid game.

Does Turbo boost ALWAYS kick in during gameplay? Or only when's it's "necessary"? How often does it "kick in" anyhow? Jw that's all.

What is nvidia laser sight? And why does it reduce fps?

only when your CPU is needed to do it work.

found a problem today while reinstalling windows.
under bios, drive setup was set to RAID when i only had 1 hdd... causing windows to "unable to install windows as windows is not compatable with system hardware"

had to set it to the default setting before i could install win 7 again.

finally, my R3 no longer hangs and crashes while in desktop. all is running fine.
used BATBOY's guide to restoring alienware look thread, and now my R3 looks like an alienware as well.

also, boot up time is down to below 1 min as oppose to over 2 min

If you are playing a FPS, the crosshair is still in 2d... This might bother some people because its hard to focus on a 3d target while trying to focus on a 2d crosshair at the same time. Nvidia has a laser sight plugin which modifies whatever game you are playing with its own lasersight/crosshair, this is an active crosshair that changes its 3d depth to match its target. This is much easier on the eyes but for some reason it lowers your fps. Mine was enabled by default. To disable it you have to go to nvidia settings.

Im not sure why this drops fps, could be since its a plugin running outside of the game that causes it ...

Why did you reinstall Windows? Was you system booting so slowly before or just after the reinstall?

Though luck steve, looks like you have the same problem as I had. Maybe it's just people with the non-SSD drives? I never switched from RAID to AHCI when I reinstalled but rather used the custom driver solution, maybe AHCI would fix it for me to... I never even tried external monitor so that was definitely not the problem. Could be also turbo boost related, imo the turbo boost switching could happen quite frequently, but that makes no sense because everything would see this issue in that case. Maybe it's just in 2630?

EDIT: Hm now that I'm thinking about it maybe the single non-SSD drive connected to the Sata-2 port on the borken sandy bridge chipset with sata settings set to RAID is what's fishy here? I could definitely see a lot of room for failiure there.

This is a little off topic but my R3 is arriving tomorrow and what 460m drivers are the best right now? Do I get it off of Nvidia's site? Is it a quick install thing or do I need to remove my old driver and install this one.

Sorry, im kind of new to all this stuff.

What specs did you get? Having the 3D model -vs- Optimus model can make a big difference in what drivers to use.

There's another thread for 460m, if I'm not mistaken. Check there. If there isn't one, maybe you could start a new thread. We need to separate 6870 from 460m, and 460m from 460m-3D.
