Was wondering if i order the m17x with 7970m , can I installed a second 7970m inside the m17x and the m17x will be able to carry it heat / power wise ?
-
I was wondering this when I purchased it, but the answer seems to be no. From what I understand, it was the R2 chassis (and not the R3 chassis) that had this functionality for older cards. The R4 chassis mirrors the R3 chassis, which means it's unlikely there is physical room for a Crossfire configuration. In terms of the motherboard, both the R4 and the M18X R2 use the HM77, so that is not a restriction.

the m17x r3 or r4 will not hold 2 gpu's. if you order a brand new m17x you will not be able to put a 2nd 7970m in it. you would have to buy an r2 and buy 2 7970m's for it to work on m17x.

There's only one GPU slot in the M17x. If you want a new laptop that can hold dual 7970s you'll need to buy an M18x.

I don't think anyone has tested dual 7970M in the M17xR2. R3/R4 are single GPU only, to get dual GPU in a new Alienware, you'll need to buy the M18x R2.

Hi, my name is Luis and I work for Alienware, unfortunately the M17xR3 and M17xR4 are not capable of running 2 of those video cards, however the M18xR2 would be capable of doing it. If you have any upgrade inquires please send us an e-mail to [email protected] and we will answer you as soon as possible. #IWork4AW

Has anyone here at NBR managed to get even a single 7970 slotted into their R2 and working yet? -
Don't believe anyone with an R2 has received one to test yet.

We're all waiting for DR650SE... -
Aw ok. I believe Flingin from over on this side of the pond is also another waiting to take delivery of his 7970. I eagerly await results from both guys, even if I won't be upgrading myself! I love seeing what ppl can make the R2 do! I've definitely found a new love and appreciation for Alienware and my R2 since coming to this community - you guys are so awesome!

Sadly it may be a while. I took the money I was going to use for dual 7970's and put it in an R4 (sig), which I still have yet to unbox. The R4 cost $94 more than the dual GPUs would have cost me, which are still not shipping. So I pounced on a price error and got a cheap R4. If the 7970's were shipping out when they were supoosed to I was going to get those but I hesitated due to the lack of updates on info from upgradeyourlaptop. Now I have a boxed R4 sitting around and no time to even open it with the holiday, inlaws coming in town, gotta go out of town this weekend. No time for fun

Internally, I've decided that I will be getting an m18x with two 7970's as opposed to purchasing 1 or 2 for my current m17xr2. I can get a pretty whopping discount here in Australia with the m18x for under 3k so I think I'd rather sell the m17xr2 for $2000 and pay the rest off to Dell.
Seems cheaper than spending $1,200 towards the 7970 upgrade. -
I doubt that somebody would actually buy your M17x R2 for 2000$....
-
Welcome to Australia.

I came to the same conclusion with with upgrading when I saw that I could get the R4 for $1200. So I ended up with the one in my sig for $1211. Seemed a much better deal then dual 7970s. Especially since AAFES price errored it. To bad the 18x doesn't have RGB. Thats why I'm keeping my R2 for the foreseeable future.

Indeed, the RGB and 1200p resolution is fantastic, and going down (though I might ignore it very soon) makes me hesitant.
Though the extra power boost makes me very eager (and I can't get both, I would need to sell the r2 to be able to afford it eventually). A quick check on ebay shows that no r2 config is as good as mine (and 1 year warranty left as well), so $2000 (or maybe even $1,800) might easily be achievable.
Can double 7970m be installed in the M17x ?
