Can someone educate me on my cpuz temps?

I have been out of the PC game for awhile. My m15x crapped and I have the following now:

    m17x r2, i7920, 4gig ram, 5870 CF, RGB.
playing games: HW monitor showed temps of the following:
    core 0: max 90
    core 1: max 78
    core 2: max TRIAL
    core 3: max 72.

What is TRIAL? That 90 seems scary? I am afraid of even trying throttlestop. I notice severe lag in intense L4D 2 survival (GPU intensive) scenes show FPS dropping from 150 to 20 then back up...then right back down. Something isn't right.

My 3dmark Vantage is 14716 which seems very good.

What's going on. Can someone help me understand throttlestop? Could my 4 gig ram be limiting me?

edit: This is a refurb and I need to troubleshoot quickly so I can decide if I want to keep it or return and wait for a single card 6970 setup for maybe the r3. I jumped on this because of the cpu and CF for 1800 bucks (us coin). Thanks all. I did search but I am hoping someone can help me out either PM or through this so I don't search with my minimal understanding for the questions I am asking

Its likely your not even getting the right temperatures anyways. Processors don't report temperatures they report the distance to the thermal junction max. If the program your using doesn't know the right TJmax then it wont report correctly.

Perhaps I am also missing something, CPU-Z is free, not a trial, nor do i remember the latest version reporting temperatures?

Anyways two good apps for reading temp that usually get it right the first time is CoreTemp and RealTemp. I personally use HWMonitor from CPUID.com same people who do CPU-Z, but I also have to set the correct TJMAX in the INI file. I can't find a solid answer seems like 100C for you, intel likes their new TCASE which isnt the same, I am not even familiar but they might have relocated the temp sensors on newer processors which also affect measurement.

ANy of those apps should work fine for you, but I have run into other machines (first gen i3 i5) that showed the max temp and were not working. 90 is all nice and toasty i think your gonna find your temps are more like 75,55,55,55 when the first core is loaded a bit.

Sorry you are right, I am running HWmonitor. I will edit my original post. The TRIAL i referred to was in regard to my CPU temps on the cores...

I also notice when I run Tripple buffer Vsync ON in L4D 2, it does stay pretty even at 60FPS and doesn't dip (which is odd because vsync off is less intense?

Then your running the PRO trial grab the regular version from cpuid.com and edit the ini file which is made after first run and set it to 100 under the tjmax option. Use the 64 bit if ur on a 64 bit os some stats wont detect with a 32 bit version, doesnt always matter. CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

Thats actually one game I never did pick up. Sounds semi odd.

thanks for the help. I downloaded the regular and got the following temps:
    87, 76, 97, 74. I know the extreme CPU's can get hot...but 97!?!!?! Anyone else think this is normal?

Might wanna change your thermal paste with some high end stuff I use TX-4 great results and fujipoly pads also change the gap pads on the mosfets with more high end pads and your temps will drop

Well it reports the 100 already when I loaded so I didn't think I needed to modify anything. However, Dell is sending out a rep sometime next week to install a new heat sink. Hopefully this will resolve my issues.

HWMonitor and most software should be using the correct TJMax value by default since it is easy to read the appropriate TJMax value directly from the Core i CPUs. It was the older Core 2 CPUs that software had to guess at because Intel did not properly document TJMax back then.

97C is too hot. Someone probably didn't do a very good job of installing your heatsink. Hopefully the Dell tech knows his stuff and can get that fixed up for you.

97C is way to hot, make sure to call Dell about the issue, since this should get resolved asap

Since this is a refurb, how much do I need to worry about the status of the CPU from the previous owner? I obviously did my due diligence when I bought it as I immediate always test and get the computer optimized. I THINK it should be OK as it hasnt shut down or anything or hit 100. Plus don't these CPU's have a higher roof than the 100? AW is coming out next week to install the new heat sink. Should I not play any games until then? Thanks all. I'm almost tempted to return it and just wait for the r3 with 485/6970. But I like the RGB, the 5870's are running cool and the i7 920 is nice. 1800 bucks is a good value proposition too....grrr what to do!

the difference between cores should be around 5 degrees max.

I am guessing this is due to the proximity of each core to the other? Otherwise unused or lesser used cores could possibly run cooler then others. I never payed attention after my cooler thread but i think on the C2D's it was a little more like 10C or so.

Just curious since I have yet to replace my laptop with an i7 which is what I wanted todo.

So can I still game while I wait for the Tech to replace the heat sink in a week? These extreme cpu's, from what I have read, do have a lot of fail safes and overhead. The worst that happens is that it throttles down for a few seconds in games.

i am in the same exact situation as you its incredible lol. i too just bought a new r2 "specs in sig" and right out the box i was getting high temps on my cpu. i was getting 93 cel thats 200 F degrees in one of my CPU cores that way over what its suppose to be.

i personally think its someking of flash issue or some install i have to do because what happens for me is my fans kick on like really high gear and then everything heats up. but i noticed if i just sit at desktop it doesnt do that, i have to open internet explorer and go to a website, then the fans kick of and my cpu is at 30% usage and the temps rise, does that same thing happen to you? because im sure your fans are on high while it gets to those high temps.

i had dell to a remote access to my comp and he seen the temps. he didnt no how to fix it so he is sending a tech to give me new cooling system and fans. "guessing its the same thing"

    heres my thread about it
