    Hey guys,

I'm thinking of getting either a

    Dell 27" IPS 2560x1440

Dell UltraSharp U2711 69cm (27?) Monitor with PremierColor Details

    or

    Dell 30" IPS 2560x1600

UltraSharp U3011 30" Monitor with PremierColor Details

However, I'm concerned whether the M17x with a 6990m could handle games like, skyrim, BF3 etc on full resolution, with max settings on one of these monitors.

    What do you guys think?

Also, I have another small question. If I had a 23" monitor with a resolution of 1920x1080 and a 30" monitor with a resolution of 1920x1080. Would the graphical demand on the graphics card be the same for each monitor?

    Cheers

The graphical demand for the same resolution will always be the same. I am unsure whether mobile cards, even the best of the best will be able to handle the best games at 2k resolutions.

I don't know if there is any difference between those monitors and t.v's. but i have hooked up my m17x-r2 to my 32in HDTV and was able to play BFBC2 on full resolution with max settings with no problems.

Aww, that's a shame. Thanks for clearing that up. I really wanted to use a 2k IPS monitor though :( .

Those would probably be fine. If there is a game that you can run very fluidly ie over 40 or 50 frames on 1080p, you may be able to get away with a 2k monitor. You'll probably need to do a bit of research into how to connect it all. Something about dual link DVI or some shizzle. HDMI probably won't cut it you'll probably have to get some sort of mini-displayport adapter.

I have the same exact M17xR3 w/ 6990 Graphics card. I am using a 27" Samsung LED/LCD at 2MS. I run all my games at 1920x1080p maxxed out with all other graphics. Runs great with High Frame rates. MW3 is getting an average of 54FPS. When I take the same M17 and hook it up to my 55" Samsung LCD, I play the same with no drop in FPS. The card simply uses overscan to compensate for the larger screen.

Now my dad has the 30" IPS monitor on his desktop. When I visited him over christmas, I took my M17 and hooked it up to his 30" and ran MW3 at 2560x1600. It looked extremely great but ran at about 24FPS maxxed out. I took out AA and set everything to Med settings and got 33FPS. That res is simply too high for the 6990M to handle properly and keep high frame rates. But the Dell 30" IPS did look great at 1920x1080, allowing me to max out MW3 at 60FPS.

Now with Skyrim, I can not comment because I don't own it. But from what I have read, it is pretty graphic intense. The M17xR3 w/ 6990 will handle it well at 1920x1080 on any size LCD or Monitor, be it 24in to 55in. But once you pass 1080P, it will slow down greatly.

Ah ok. Thanks for that guys. So it's a no for 2k monitors with the m17x R3 then. Maybe with the M17x R4?

    Rep'd both of you. :)

I am currently using the U3011 monitor with the R2 in my specs. They are 20% bios oced.

At the end of the day, dual 5870s perform much much faster than single 6990M in raw power. And I can run smooth BF3 at 1600p on Medium setting. It lags A LOT and totally unplayable at ULTRA settings.

I can barely get it playable at Need for Speed The Run with 1600p MAX settings. I might consider lowering the settings a bit to make it smoother.

MW3 is one of the easiest games to run anyways and I get extremely very very very smooth (100% satisfied) fps with 1600p max.

IT is really really hard for single card setup to run the latest titles at 1600p. My opinion is that it wont run well at 1600p at all for the very hard titles. 1080p should be good for now, especially games later on will be harder to run.

1080p is great only for up till certain screen size. 1600p is really beyond amazing in quality for 30 inch, which is great size for gaming.

I have a feeling that besides the MW series, my R2 will not be able to run the most intense next generation games in 1600p settings. That is why I have the M18x.. for now...

Edit: Sorry just realized that my specs no longer exists... its just i7 940xm, 16gb, dual 5870s oced.

Ah ok. Have you hooked up your M18x to your monitor? If so, what's the fps etc like?

unfortunately I havent yet. It is out for sale as sealed in the box... I am sooo tempted though...

I am 100% sure that BF3 will run at 1600p ultra settings with M18x in my sig.
