I have an Alienware M17xr1 and recently had to do a fresh install of windows, but now I'm stuck on my integrated driver as I can't get the driver for my GTX 260m to install, it keeps reading as being incompatible. I need help!

Did you follow the driver install order for your machine ?
Alienware Initial Driver Installation | Dell US
You also need to install this driver before you attempt to install any other driver .
Driver Details | Dell US
I would also recommend checking to see if you disbaled your dedictated card in the bios at any stage too . You could have done this by running the laptop on battery or pressing the ALT F7 key . -
No, this computer has never let me update the video driver, but I reinstalled windows and used the disc that came with the computer, but I can't access my dedicated card because the driver isn't on the computer and no, it isn't disabled in the bios.

You can mod the inf of newer drivers and be good to go. -
How and what do I need to do?

You can find modded INF files on laptopvideo2go.com
Does it appear in the device manager? -
Wasn't able to find the modded INF files..
It doesn't appear in device manager since I don't have any drivers installed for it. -
Have you tried to install the graphics driver I linked in my first post in this thread ? Download that driver and give it a shot if it works you can install newer nvidia drivers .
-
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
That doesn't make any sense, if there are drivers for your laptop, it will show up as your 260M in your display adapters. If no drivers are installed, it'll show up as Standard VGA adapter. There has to be something in display adapters or your computer would not POST. -
I have Windows 8.1 pro installed in my M17x R1 with a single 260m and this is what I did:
-Download the 260m driver from the dell page and also the newest drivers from Nvidia.
-Inside the Dell driver folder, look for the inf (dont install it) and get the two lines needed for the 260m GPU. I think there are two 260m so copy the four lines.
-Now go to the Nvidia driver, look for the right inf and paste those lines in the right place.
-Disable driver signature if Windows 8 and proceed to install.
I am assuming that you are familiar with modding .inf, otherwise I will explain myself better when I finish work.
Cheers. -

Edit: GeForce 334.89 WHQL INF naming change/nvdmi.inf (previous nvdmn.inf)Roman Legion, katalin_2003 and Alienware-Natalia_J like this. -
I'm trying this now, I just got around to searching for the dell drivers for the computer yesterday and the computer recognises the 260M as being there now and it running on a 2009 driver, but I'm going to try and edit as you laid out for me to get my driver up to date. I'll let you know how it goes.

+1 Like and thanks, It worked perfectly, now if I could figure out why if my M17xr1 sits idle for a bit, especially sitting idle on the internet, the computer likes to get really unresponsive.j95 likes this.

Are you really Alienware Tech support? If so, do you have any idea why when I walk away for more than a few minutes, especially idling on the internet, the computer says "Not Responding"?

Yeap, I am Alienware Tech support. What exactly is not responding? The graphics card? The network card? What exactly does the error say? -
