I have a BD-player but when I put a BR in and it says it can not play the format do I need a special player? Windows Media center will not play them either. Any one know why or what I could be missing?

Your system should have shipped with the proper BR software to play it, I think it's PowerDVD but someone else would need to confirm since I don't use BR.
-
ok that is what I thought I bought it on here and the guy only sent me my windows and drivers CD so I will pm him and ask where the blue ray software is.. Can I get it off dells web site?
-
Bluray software can cost over $50, so no, you can't get it free from Dell.
-
Should it be on a Alien Respawn disk?
-
you guys out there with the m17x r2 with BR player did yall get a software cd for it or was it on the alienware disk?
-
is that the same thing as the resource disk?

It's PowerDVD, and it comes on the resource disk.
-
Yes, Power DVD 8 is on the Alienware resource disk, if you bought your system from another person, ask them for the Resource disk that came with it. If that does not work call Dell, register your system under you, and ask for a resource disk.

You can install Shark007 Windows 7 Codecs and play via VLC or WMP 7 , it should work. I never had to purchase BD movie software to play BD movies.
-
Well you need the Certified Nvidia drivers to allow blueray to work, maybe it is the same with ATI.
Try some other drivers. -

You said you have the drivers disk....PowerDVD is on that....
-
There are two disks that come with this laptop, the OS, and the resource disk, it's on the resource disk. As mentioned above VLC is free and will work too.

You need to download a codec I think;

My VLC plays .MKV files, which I believe are Bluray rips. The latest version is 1.1.2 according to their website. I have not used it to play an actual Bluray disk though.
Can't watch Blue Ray movies why?
