I have a BD-player but when I put a BR in and it says it can not play the format do I need a special player? Windows Media center will not play them either. Any one know why or what I could be missing?

Your system should have shipped with the proper BR software to play it, I think it's PowerDVD but someone else would need to confirm since I don't use BR.

Bluray software can cost over $50, so no, you can't get it free from Dell.

It's PowerDVD, and it comes on the resource disk.

Yes, Power DVD 8 is on the Alienware resource disk, if you bought your system from another person, ask them for the Resource disk that came with it. If that does not work call Dell, register your system under you, and ask for a resource disk.

You can install Shark007 Windows 7 Codecs and play via VLC or WMP 7 , it should work. I never had to purchase BD movie software to play BD movies.

Well you need the Certified Nvidia drivers to allow blueray to work, maybe it is the same with ATI.

    Try some other drivers.

I've had no probs playing Blu Ray, using the PowerDVD included from Dell. 1080 HD movies look awesome on an RGBLED screen. Either PowerDVD is missing or corrupted.

There are two disks that come with this laptop, the OS, and the resource disk, it's on the resource disk. As mentioned above VLC is free and will work too.

Well if he gave you everything, like Scook said, it should be on one of the disk somewhere

Really? I need to check for update, the version I have doesn't recognize Blu Ray...

My VLC plays .MKV files, which I believe are Bluray rips. The latest version is 1.1.2 according to their website. I have not used it to play an actual Bluray disk though.
