Hey folks.
First of, must tell you this was a pain for me as I have been waiting for 3 weeks already (order 01/20 edd 02/14 status "in production" on website)
Called order modification department to check status of the order, the person was nice and asked me to wait for a min.
Let me also add that this is only my experience, you may think what you guys want, but this is what has actually happened, so please no judgment (unless supported by a claim).
after waiting like 5 minutes, she responded that she is really sorry about bla bla bla AND that unfortunately for me (apologies again) the order will eventually be (as all the orders they have for r3s not shipped) canceled as far as intel is still to provide the non-defective parts, which is going to happen not sooner than April and that if I want to cancel my order now she can connect me with a person who can assist me with that.
I dont even know what to do at this point, just thanks to folks who were posting regarding this issue with sandy bridge, if not you guys, I would have waited another week and I need a laptop like yesterday.
I probably am going to get a refurbd R2 or if someone wants to sell his R3 I might consider that in pm as well, or if perhaps you have tips where can I get best deal for those.
hope this thread is relevant and someone finds this helpful. I hate what happened.

Sorry for this garbage. All the wind taken out of the sails of too many people along every step of this sandy bridge debacle. Should be an awesome time for gaming laptop enthusiasts but just big flub from Intel...our best and brightest.
No doubt you will find some solace with the R2! Wish I could come up with a make lemonade out of lemons saying here but there is none.... -
Try getting a bit nasty with the rep. I was really pissed when they canceled mine. I yelled at the rep a bit (I was really angry -_-) and they gave me a e-mail confirming that when the r3 is available again they will give me 20% off it. Doesn't get you a laptop now, but I am sure they will give you 20% off a R2 if you need one now, proly next day shipping free as well.
-
LoL problem in my case was that she redirected me to like 3 other person for order cancellation and I had 5 minutes of time left to talk to her so yea, I missed that bit, moreover, I am over those 3 weeks of waiting I could afford myself. I need the lap before 16 feb. dead. and you know, funds are not unlimited as well...

I am in the same boat. My R3 order was cancelled last Friday. The worst thing is that Dell never contacted me until I called them, then cancelled my order. That was 1 week from the day my sale rep promised me someone from Dell was gonna contact me about the issue.
I bet there are a lot of people who are having "In Production" order status and hoping for their orders to be shipped. And a lot of them will be receiving "cancelled order" very soon.
But anyway, how can your order of 01/20 be cancelled? That is just very sad.
I think we should wait until March to see if there is any good news. Right now it is not a good time to buy refurb R2 because I cant find any coupon at all. The 20% Dell outlet was just expired 1/28. Plus, when R3 comes back, it might have better GPU and may be the RGB screen. Who knows for sure, but we have been waiting for 2 weeks, why shouldn't we wait for 2-3 more weeks, right?
+1 rep for your info. -
alright, thx for the feedback, Torai, question for me however is still: what do I do right now?
Plus, don't forget, R3 is really placed against asus g72SW which has totally same specs (well, less or more) and I don't think they will change anything about production line, so don't expect RGB or crossfire, for that needs they got m18x comming. since it already cost em millions of dollars to turn down the whole affair with r3. for me it would've been better if they sent me the damn laptop and I could replace the part by sending it bck later on.
If only I had more time -.- ... -
do you have any other laptop to use temporarily ?
-
that's the thing. I first saw AW comming out in Jan so I sold my old laptop (I had a buyer that time willing to take it right away) so no, I'm stuck in between :S
-
Same thing happened to me, I was going to buy the R3 last week so i sold my W860CU, now i have nothing. Damn Intel
.
It shouldn't be April before we can buy one again, probably early March. -
hell yea it will be april. trust my judgment. worst thing right now is that i rent a room near my campus and well ... my roommate plays and surfs web all day and I have to watch it... killer
-
I was going to go R3 but (even before the fiasco with the R3) decided on the R2. The build quality is proven, the system is pretty much ironed out, is still relevant for what I want most (gaming) and the dell outlet plus coupon was too much to turn down.
For reference, I got the R2: i7 920xm, 4gig ram, 1900 by 1200 RGB, 5870CF, 500gig 7200RPM HD and warranty for 1800, 2000 US dollars after taxes. $2000.41 to be exact after taxes and free next day shipping. I figured in a few months the R3 with the best screen and 6970 would be about 2k before taxes.
Though there is no guarantee that the 6970 would fit in the R2, but there seems to be hope and I am absolutely loving the build quality of this machine. To get a $4k laptop for less than 1/2 the price is a great value proposition. While you make some compromises with SB and usb 3.0, HDMI in etc, you also get dual cards, RGB and a great cooling and build design. I think you will be happy if you want to get a beast machine now without wait. IMO of course. -
I understand it's sad but I believe this is Dell's chance to take all the concerns we had with the R3 and make it better before the re-launch.
-
Funny, that the same articles reporting this Intel Sandybridge build error always mentioned how Intel already wrote off seven hundred billion and that it would not substantially effect thir quarterly earnings. All about the money.
Leo, ever think about renting a gaming laptop? Is there a place to rent a decent laptop for a few months? -
well.. in Burlington Vermont... I doubt that. though what I could do is... go for something else like R2. But how do I get it built in several days?... think not possible other than purchasing off ebay refurbd.
btw I didn't go for R2 because gaming is not initially what I intended to buy R3 for. its 3D, HDMI in and usb 3.0 i needed more than that. I dont play so much games as I need portability and from that side R3 was a winner too. Wish anybody sold his R3 to mewould be both time and cost efficient. tho i hate used things, i'd still consider that.
-
-
I would definitely like that, yeah. btw, did Mandrake send his one back yet?
and as I remember: you can mail the lap back to dell for reconfiguration after they get new parts right? -
-
nono meant they will replace flawed MB. isn't that so?
and i didn't figure out where to post about buying stuff? maybe someone will sell me a r3 indeed -
DaneGRClose Notebook Virtuoso
Well it's probably not likely but there has been some very slight consideration on my part of sending my R3 back, if I end up deciding to not keep it you're first on my list
Of course whether I decide to keep it or not the right price tag will always get me to part with any computer I have, if you want one bad enough you can always PM me an offer and if not if I decide I don't want it I will pm you. Good luck with whatever you do as it's truly an awesome machine.
-
Everything has its price, my friend. Problem is: price has to be right. especially I think both parties involved should consider of interest. right now i'm only moving despreately coz i got no better options. I will pm u by the way.
If anyone else thinks he can sell his R3 to me - please don't hesitate to pm -
-
u're damn right.
one thing to consider still though that these people have actually opened and played with lap a lil bit, makes it not new. though I am ready to pay what it's worth if it doesn't hit my budget hard. Hope DaneGRClose will consider my offer -
DaneGRClose Notebook Virtuoso
Ditto ^^^ Honestly if you're not willing to pay a decent price similar to what LVNeptune did you're probably not going to find a good R3 until Dell releases the sales on them again unfortunately.
-
You're right. I pm'd you back. things are negotiatable aren't they? well actually i did ask couple guys on ebay too, am looking at couple r2s too, if i dont find a deal till i receive my money back from dell, i'd have to got for something less. you know, i am just a student, don't own a company YET
-
DaneGRClose Notebook Virtuoso
Trust me buddy things don't always get better financially after school lol, especially if you go off the deep end and have a wife, kids, house, cars, etc :-S Anyways enough of the OT, I responded to your PM and we'll take the conversation there
-
Hmm.. Im thinking of getting a R2. It sucks when I check Dell, NBR, etc. every minute, customizing a bit then close window at check out page... It is extremely annoying and time consuming. I cant focus on anything else... so probably I will just go ahead and take a R2, then forget all other stuff including R3, sandy bridge, etc.. and have my life come back to normal. LOL.
-
xD
you wont believe how many people are affected with same issue -.-
annoys me as hell.
still, before i have my money back i got couple days of time for figuring this whole thing out. \
cheers. -
This may be more spice in the stew..
Intel ships Sandy Bridge chipsets again, but should you buy one? | Crave - CNET -
ya, i've read that. thing is not all of us feel great about still having to send laptop back to change MB. especially if i get one on side - how would i be authorized for a return?
-
Finally made up my mind. Just ordered a desktop for temporarily use and see how it goes later.
-
After reading it says 5 to 15 % affected and they have workarounds in place. I wouldn't have a problem buying one.
I have not even heard what the time span is on the ports going bad, month, year, 5 years. Just a thought.
