Well Here are a few pics. This has kept me busy the last week or so. I got bored so I took my black M17x R2 chassis and painted it a Volkswagon Candy white. Came out pretty good. Wish I had better light and a better camera. (Nikon Coolpix P90). Not a bad camera, but I needed more lights. Anyway I'm ready to crash for the night but though I'd show off my latest mod to my system. Now I have a Silver chasis I need to figure out what to do with. But anyway, here are a bunch of pics of the Candy White M17x R2.

I have a film over the screen still from when I had the screen replaced. Still haven't taken it off.

I ended up going with white because it was a large change from the previous stock silver, and black that I have had. Colors I thought about were a deep pearl blue, and a metallic gunmetal grey. I actually bought these colors, but they were so similiar to the black that I eventually went with the white. Plus it matches my desk! lol.

Let me know what you think and your opinions of the paint job. This was done with simple AutoZone rattle can paint. Just a lot of work to get it right. Looking forward to any input or opinions.

White goes well with any AlienFX color! :D

Looks like it turned out great! If you have time, I'd like to see a writeup of the process. :)

edit: Looks like you did a very brief writeup already! :p

BTW, what cooler is that under your R2? Is it the Cryo LX?
You also have what looks to be an external amp. Any info you could give on that?

Gorgeous job! White is such a unique choice too. Love it!
Love that you left bezels black too. Makes it look sophisticated.
So when you sell it one day, does the custom color give the machine more value as well?

I really love the soft touch finish on my R3, I wouldn't want to sand it off permanently. I'd probably want to re-rubberize it with a custom color rubber coating... Not something I'd really thought about until I saw this though. Awesome! :)

Brother DR, that's just sweet looking. I don't even normally like white, but you and Brother Quad are changing my thoughts. That pearl white looks mighty nice for a rattle can job.

What's up with the rags and clamps in that one photo? Holding glued-on parts in place for curing? If so, what did you use for adhesives?

I always felt white contrasted the interior of the M17x perfectly! Great job!

btw, did you use automotive grade paint or just spray paint? I came to find that spray paint can only last for so long because it lacks hardener and takes years for the enamel to fully harden...

Thanks, the clamps are to clue the inner frame to the bottom part of the Chassis. The bottom part is shown with and without the frame in the pics.

Yup, Cryo LX. except it doesn't work because the power plug on the cooler mobo broke. But it gives the system a nice angle. I've never used the M17x flat.
If I get time next week, I'll probably do a more in depth write up on it. Hopefully I can find some time.

I wish, but nah, temps are still the same.

I hope it adds value! Although by the time I sell, it'll probably need a new paint job :p

Thanks man, yea it was for the bottom chassis and the inter frame. They are originally glue together and so I tried a quick curing epoxy, but that didn't work so I turned to JB Weld. Stuff will probably never come off. I used the rags so the clamps wouldn't damage the paint. I had to use a lot of clamps to get everything perfectly lined up. Especially in the corner where a Kensington lock goes. That was the hardest to get just right because the bottom chassis cover needs to curve slightly to fit on the inner frame. I use a Kensington lock on the system, just in case someone wants to steal it they have another hurdle to overcome.

LOL, thanks! haha, I suppose dell wouldn't want to paint a replacement white for me :p

Thanks, yea I used just regular spray paint. Dupli-Color Candy White Well see how long it holds up. I rarely move my system off the desk, and my wife doesn't use it. I did add a few coats of wax to it to keep the dirt of it. Hopefully it'll hold up since I'm not too rough on it...anymore :p

Thanks guys for the comments. I definitely like to just stare at it more now hahaha

Thanks guys. Sadly I traded that system for the X7200 in my sig. I just really wanted a hexcore processor, and 4 HDDs with triple channel memory. :D

Removing the screen from the lid is actually really simple. Just a few screws. The hard part is removing the base and the parts attached to it. The only thing I found for that is some gentle force since it's clued to the inter skeleton part. The other hard part is gluing it back together so it all lines up just right. Hence all the clamps in my pics lol :p

Thanks man! I'm not really sure what it would go for. It's definately one heck of a beast. 6 cores and 12 threads at 3.6GHz :D I also love the 4 HDDs. Right now I have a 256GB SSD as an apps/OS drive, and another 256GB SSD for just games. Then 2 TB of storage. I love this system. Trying to decide if I want to paint it or not. I just installed the 24GB 1333MHz RAM tonight. :D It's like having a small portable and powerful desktop. :p

I wonder what ever happened to this system. :p I traded it for a Clevo X7200 which I'm still rocking, but if my memory serves me, I believe the guy I traded it to sold it. Hmm. Wonder where it is now, and how the paint has held up.
