Hi guys I noticed my primary card had pretty high temperatures at idle,
so I repasted the the die and replaced the thermal pads with a 1mm thick fujipoly.
Even after that the cards are still showing
    GPU#1 52.5
    GPU#2 81
    GPU#3 63
    at idle.
At load the gpu#2 sensor goes up to 88. Is it faulty sensors? Or is this normal for the m17x R2?

and no problems during gaming so far

I have the ati 5870 in CF
    here's a screenshot for what's happening
    [IMG]

The gpu memory on average is at 73. Is this normal?
I just replaced the thermal pads with 1.0mm ones and was wondering if maybe I should have used 0.5 ones

the stock pads are 1mm on a 5870 aren't they? What were the ram temps before the repaste? This is the only real way to compare. Is 73 onload? If it is on load, that isn't high at all. If it is running up to 88 (as per your original post), it might be a tad high, but still within normal spec for a 5870

73 is off load. Max at 106 when i'm doing some gaming. That's only for the memory though.
The other two parameters looked pretty ok maxing out 74 on load.

That is not healthy! I would suggest taking the card of and look if everything the pads are touching the ram.

Also the pads for the 6970M are 1mm but everyone seems to say you need the 0.5 mm versions. Don't know if that is the case with this vidcard 2.

Are your fans spinning at full speed?
    Maybe:
    -fan issue
    -sensor issue
-too much paste/bad thermal paste job
-heatsink improperly seated, screws not tightened enough or too much.

And remember thermal pad thickness counts but keep in mind that rigidity does too, example: two thermal pads of different brands, both 1mm thick won't probably have the same resistance when squeezing them ;)

    thanks for the replies.
just notice something, on fresh restart, with nothing open, the memory temp is at 50-ish. Only when I start watching videos etc it spikes up to 70+ and at gaming, the occasional 100.
So does this mean the thermal pads are improperly placed. How do you guys place it?
Do you lay it over the memory first or on the metal heat sink on top before screwing everything back together?

Vince, download the latest HwInfo64, i just checked on my M17x R2 and Mumak did a good job developing the tool for this machine. I see that now it properly reads fan speeds separately for CPU and GPUs separately.

From your screenshots i can't tell what version you're running but your fan speeds are weird 100%=21RPM??!! Even with a older version you should've had more accurate values as he's been implementing support for HwInfo for quite some time now.

So get the latest version(not beta), uninstall/erase your current one and post a screenshot of the sensor window again.

    thanks for all the suggestions!
I reopened the laptop and repasted the die and relocated the thermal pads so they stick to the memory better. Even took off the orange sticker which had paste underneath it.
Memory temp idling at 50 ish now.
At idle, fans are at 30% - 11rpm? Is this how it should be?

ok..here's an update..when I'm watching videos etc, the temperature of the memory goes up to 65, and the gpu fan says it's spinning at 300 rpm (30%) fan speed? Something seems wrong

tested with some gaming and temps are hitting 73 max.
So I assumme something wrong with the sensor on the fans?

there are no fan connected to the gfx so the fan readings are incorrect.

Those are the values I want to see from him, above 'Intel PCH'
