Assuming that everyone who cares now has the Catalyst 11.10_Preview3 drivers, here are a couple of upcoming ATI/AMD beta drivers that are kicking around the internet for the hard core guys. Based on limited experience, both work fine, but do not contain any big surprises or boosts. Of interest, the 11.12's include settings for the Radeon 7000 series cards, so they're coming.

So far as I can tell, the Cat 11.9's seem to provide the best performance for most uses, but the search continues. :)

The 11.12 are the worst. Already posted on Guru yesterday they suck. The performance is horrible.

I don't think they are alpha or beta. They are just a test driver. If they were preview drivers, AMD would have released them. As I said, I think they are just test drivers that weren't supposed to have been released and releasing these drivers to public is probably going to do more damage to AMD's image than good.

I hope AMD finds a way to plug this leak to unstable and terrible drivers stop being released. It's already been posted that CF performance is also bad, and some are having issues with BC2 with these 11.12 they haven't seen in a year...

The 11.12 driver is an early beta driver, in other words, its really not meant to be for use at all except for developmental purposes - anyone running these drivers expecting equal/better/best performance is deluding himself. Running these drivers are at your own risk, so it's really not up to AMD to stem the flow of these drivers since they'll leak out sooner or later anyway :D

OK so since drivers move so fast, what is the latest official release? 11.9? I know there are preview and beta drivers, but it seems like AMD has released a driver in some form or another every few weeks. Since I've just been installing my games, I'm going to install whatever is best. At the moment I have 11.9 betas installed. They've been fine for what I play, which isn't really much :p Also, as far as CAPS, I don't think I've ever installed them. Not that it's hard, just havn't gamed much, and I never use them for benching.

Lastnight I downloaded the 11.9 official drivers and CAP 3 I believe. Probably install them tonight. So my question is, is 11.9 the latest official driver?

Does 11.10 previews, or whatever stage 11.10 is at, offer anything better than the 11.9? Are there still kinks to get worked out? Stability, and gaming performance are whats going to matter to me. So thats what I'm looking for.

Though I wouldn't mind throwing 11.11/11.12 betas on my benching drive :p

Sorry if I rambled, doing 10 things at once.

    11.9 is the latest version.
11.10 is beta/preview, allows Battlefield 3 to function properly (11.9 and below won't work).
Previews are generally stable but might still have some kinks to work out.
If you want to try BF3 then install 11.10, else I would recommend to stay at 11.9.

I used regular dell drivers on my 6970m to play BF3 and it worked fine.

Our two visitors with a burr under their saddles have obviously never used either of these driver sets; further, they're using equipment that is not comparable to that used by forum members. They, particularly hulawafu, are just regurgitating comments from a Guru3d forum which are overwhelmingly directed to Crossfire performance in new or beta releases and has little relevance for most forum members. It should be remembered that these are early beta driver sets; they are not for everyone; if you like to explore new releases and have the desire and technical competence to deal with whatever glitches may occur, try them; if not, don't. That said, I tried the 11.12 Early Beta drivers for general use, tested with the Futuremark benchmarks, and took a spin in Crysis. The drivers were stable and performed normally, if marginally slower, on my setup; on the other hand, I saw no particular benefit from the new betas at this point. YMMV, but don't believe everything posted by visiting newbies.

Some graphics options are unavailable with drivers that are Catalyst 11.9 and before, but it should be playable. Sorry for my mistake :)

On the subject of whether certain games work well under certain drivers. What about Rage under the forthcoming 11.10 drivers? I have read a little bit about Rage not working well or at all under AMD cards on it's release. I know there was a special Rage driver floating around. However rather than mess around with that I'd like to think if I upgraded from my current 11.8 drivers to 11.10 the fix for Rage would then be included? I've never had a problem updating new AMD drivers over the top of the old ones but each time I do it brings a certain level of anxiety, so my preference is to update as few times and in as a few steps as possible. Although I do system image before I update a driver so can always roll back (but it takes a long time!).

    Cheers,
    Wayne

11.9 worked fine on BF3 beta. 11.10 worked fine on Rage. Got a solid 60fps on Rage with the 11.10 drivers although every now and then there was significant frame rate drops. Not enough to spoil the game, but enough to be noticable.
