I traded my 6970m for a 5870m + money (needed this stuff, $). I installed it in the laptop and Windows automatically found a driver for it. It works but I have no HDMI output, video and audio. What can I do to fix this? Thanks

Try the newest drivers from here: Videocards - ATI Catalyst Windows 7 8 and Vista
I haven't had much luck with drivers from AMD's website, but a direct download of the drivers from guru3d works great. From what I remember HDMI video output only worked and not audio, but the last time I used HDMI with my M17X was about a year ago, with older drivers. Unfortunately right now I can't confirm working audio output with the newest drivers as my M17X is currently dead. -

Did you get an Alienware card, I know Alienware sometimes are picky with non Alienware MXM cards.

It lists the subvendor as Dell in GPU-Z. I was running the latest drivers of AMD website installed over the Dell 6970m driver.
P.S.: Forgot to say, my M17x is an R3 (the one in my sig), so no official Alienware support for the 5870m. Would that mean I need a moded driver? -
subvendor in GPU-z does NOT mean it is a dell card bro...and 5870m in R3.....a massive downgrade bro !

How do I know then if it is a Dell card? I know it is a big downgrade but I plan on upgrading in May, and I needed the money now. This was the best way for a quick buck.

If I remember correctly, the card was red. I installed the latest driver, still nothing.

Do I need a modded driver?

You will need to flash the vBios to get new drivers to work properly, instructions are here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-17-m17x/734549-should-i-buy-m17x-r2-5.html#post9421159
Use the drivers from Guru3D after. Before you flash the vBios you will have to have the official drivers for the 5870M - which are on the Dell website under the M17X R2 section. Without the official drivers installed, then you will brick your card.
Changed GPU and HDMI stopped working, HELP!
