I purchased my R4 in August and now I have just received one that I bought for my girlfriend and I noticed a few changes that were made on it. First and most important was the charger difference. It is much lighter and smaller. Although it doesn't have the blue light it is a good alternative for the old larger one. Even though it is smaller the drop in amp is not that much and probably won't be noticeable. Also they have finally accepted the fact that people are going to want windows 8 soon. So what they did was change the windows icon to the new windows 8 icon. How do you feel about these changes?

The charger they gave you is a 180W PSU. That's why it's much lighter and smaller. That and the voltage and amperage on the photo you posted only adds up to 180 watts. The one you got with your original R4 is the 240W version. Unless her R4 has an extreme CPU, there's no need for her to use the 240W PSU.

    Small correction: 240 W, not 220 W

So chargers under 240W come without the blue light on the connector? Or all new PSUs will be that plain?

Its a different model from a different supplier, the delta 240W is one of the highest quality power supplies you can get (delta always makes good bricks).

Typically you need heavier components to make a higher quality PSU.

So which power supply you get is determined by the components you chose? I would love to have a smaller unit but not if it, say, won't let me overclock one of the high end GPUs.

I kinda find it a little bit of a let down they got rid of that light on the charger. Was useful for trying to plug in my machine in the dark. Oh well. :(

When watching movies in the dark,I just don't like the blue light on my charger, so I covered it with some tape anyway. I really like the go dark option in the alienware fx options too.

Don't see the need for the blue light, would be more useful on the charger itself because you can't exactly see the blue light behind the screen anyway.

    Windows 8. Hell no.

each to their own, but once you get Windows 8 all setup and optimized for power-usage, it is a lot faster than 7. ;)

It may be the case that the smaller PSU is being supplied for lack of stock of the larger unit. When I ordered my R4 (one of the first pre-orders), I tried to get a second PSU with it. Dell told me there was no stock of spares and that it would be several months before more would be available.

Shortage? Im afraid of my PSU dying and not being able to get a replacement to keep my computer going..

I think its more because its smaller and can keep up with the 660m power requirements, the HD7970m and 680m both are 100W cards, hence the requirement of the 240W PSU. Just buy another PSU? mine only cost £30 and they were identical to the one supplied by dell.

I just got my computer on December 3rd, and it has the light up tipped power cord, so maybe it has something to do with the video card & processor you select?

Just to give an update about the charger. I called Dell and they ha no idea why I was sent a 180W charger they said that wasn't even an option. They are sending new one for Tuesday.
