    So currently have a ati 4870 and not a big fan of ati anymore, anyway I can swap out my 4870 for 2 nvidia 280m in sli? have a m17x r2.

    if you have R2, you can only have the GTX 285M SLI, no other NVIDIA card will work.

    What made you tired enough of your 4870 to want to swap it?

    well originally i only bought it with one and ive regretted it since I did shoulda full blown when I bought it. So now im deciding to upgrade it.
    You sure? Can Anyone confirm it won't work?

    Yes it has been tried before(putting stock GTX 280m in the R2).
    But since you can flash them to GTX 285m they should work.
    There's a copy of the stock vBIOS in one of my threads for the GTX 285 in the R2.

    Does flashing it affect the performance of the cards? And what does flashing the cards enable me to do if i didn't. So if I install two gtx 280s into my computer and start it how much could I do without flashing to 285?
