    Gday
The time has come to finally change my Dell 1530 and I am going for a m17x . The old 8600MGT has given me some good service playing crysis , Modern Warfare 1 and 2 and is even playing Starcraft II prerrt well. But I want to hook up my laptop and do gaming on my 46inch Samsung LED backlight and the 8600MGT cannot handle that size with artefacts appearing when I play BFBC 2.

I have some questions about bugs and all that.

The main one is related to the CFX 5870 bugs.

Should I definitly go for dual cards or just the one .

And If I go to dual cards can I switch one off if CFX is causing me problesm.

Any MAJOR bugs that I should be aware off ??
    cheers

I have had no issues with my M17X. I would definitely get the CF5870's. I have not had any problem with mine so far. You can however switch one off if you are having trouble with them. The only major problem that I have found is the touchpad sucks!

I suppose its luck of the draw with the problems. Dell probably make thousands everyday around the world with no problems. There are issues discussed on here with the M17x but its probably a small percentage compared to the number made with no problesm. Just have to hope and touch wood your one works fine out of the box.

I think a lot of the problems people are having is when they start trying to tweak this or that instead of giving the default OS load a shot. The only reason I did a fresh install is because I installed and SSD I had as the boot drive and used a 500gb HDD as the storage and user files drive. I actually put the hard drive that originally came with the lappy away. I contemplated returning this laptop at first reading about the problems other people were having. This scared me and got me worried but then I realized that I haven't had any problems with mine. One exception there is a bug with Starcraft 2 about units and minerals disappearing or not showing. This is easily worked around by doing the tweaks listed in another thread listed in this forum.

It is luck of the draw I guess and most problems can be fixed by us here on the forums. It is a great lappy and the build quality and feel is second to none in my opinion.

Spend a day reading posts in the 10.7 driver section, and the touch pad section. Then decide.

I'd wait a little bit longer...

He doesn't have to install the 10.7 driver if he doesn't want to. And according to his post, he plays a lot of first person shooters. Most people that play FPSs invest in a good mouse.

OH are the ATI drivers really buggy ???

Thats not completly Dells fault if they are anyway , ATI need to sharpen their act if they keep releasing buggy drivers

There's no official Dell release of the 10.7. The driver on the Dell website is a good bit older, but very stable. If you're running 10.7, you can't let your laptop go to sleep or run on battery power. If either of those will be issues, don't install it. The driver that will come installed from Dell will take care of all of your needs. I don't personally ever use my touchpad.

I seem to recall problems with sleep mode on other sites. Sound advice , I will use the stock driver then which has obviously been tested and tweaked by Dell Engineers.

Well if you want to play SC2...10.5 will not cut it. Thats why I said to wait.

It is Dell's fault because AMD is on 10.7 and Dell is on 10.5 still.

If you use the touchpad for casual browsing(in bed), your going to be disappointed. Many people uninstall the Dell driver, and use the windows one. Which works much better, but turning off the trackpad with that driver is something I haven't figured out, when I plug in my mamba

FN+F12 turns the touchpad off no matter what driver is being used. And yeah, if SC2 is the only game you intend to play, ever, don't get an M17x until the official 10.7 comes out. Or just set your laptop to never go into sleep mode, and never run it on battery. I'd say to not buy a game if it didn't work on a laptop before I said to not buy a laptop if a certain game didn't work on it. And if you wait too damn long, you'll be wondering if you should wait for the new tech.

Funny , Starcraft works well on my 8600M GT with the lastest Nvidia drivers and its a Dell as well. Obviously Nvidia seems to be way ahead at designing drivers that work with all computers

One more question is the Nvidia GTX480M out for lappas??

So the official driver would be the Dell 10.7 rather than the ATI 10.7 ?

I went to 3D Guru and they had the 10.7 WHQL certified version out , released July 27th , is this still causing problems with SC II , sleep mode and battery ???

geee 10.7 drivers causing that kinda grief = FAIL!!!
Come on ATI lift your game.

Also i keep reading everywhere about us not being able to download and install the ATI mobility drivers directly from ATI website and install. Whats that about? Warrenty void issues or something? Or do only the ATI drivers provided by Dells support page work? Cheers.

You can play Starcraft 2 with the Dell 10.5 drivers! I do it all the time and I don't have issues since I used the tweaked settings thread.
