Hi everyone![]()
Anyway, i am looking at getting a M17x in the near future. However my dad doesn't understand why I need to spend $2K on a laptop with some fancy graphics card to play games, when i should be studying. I am pretty much a straight A student in grade 10 and i recently sold my ps3 to get into pc gaming. Since the refresh is due to be coming ut soon, I thought that the r3's might be going a bit cheaper. So i was just wondering where I could get the best deal on a M17x for under or around $1800 with:
A graphics card able max out most games at 45-50+ FPS
At least 250GB hard drive (preferably a SSD)
A decent i7 processor
Last 3-5 years
I will be upgrading the RAM myself probably, but if it has 8GB+ that would be good.
Thanks![]()
btw, please dont suggest a Sagner/Clevo or any laptop like that. I am a huge fan of the lights on Alienware's (kinda childish) and have always wanted one.

If your dad is military or is enrolled in college (or you know someone who is) you can use either AAFES (military) or the Dell EPP (Higher education) for a substantial discount. The M17xR3 in my sig cost me 1900 with tax and shipping. I upgraded the RAM and SSD from newegg.com . Also, I live in TN so sales tax was 9.75% too.
As far as wanting the Alienware for its lights and being childish, I'm 37 and a professional Sys Admin/Implementation Engineer. I carried my M11xR2 into meetings with the Board of Directors of a major healthcare corporation. They were rather impressed my 'little' netbook kicked the crap out of their Latitude's and Lenovo's. Even got one of them to buy an Alienware for home use.
This is the right time to buy though. With the update coming in the next few months, prices are much cheaper. If you MUST have new, you will want a 580m or a 6990m graphics card (GPU). Make sure you don't misclick and get the 560m (big mistake). If the 580m is not available, get the 6990m.
For the screen, get the 1080p 60hz. The 900p is not nearly as nice.
Everything else, just get the lowest that Dell offers. It can be upgraded quite easily and much cheaper than what Dell charges you.
Hope that helps!
