So I'm beginning to think that my 2nd R3 has such an ugly black coat on it, cuz they may have double painted it or something to address the peeling. It certainly does feel much thicker in coating compared to the first, which was very smooth. This second one feels more grippy rubber rather than smooth rubber like the original.

I guess I got lucky with mine. I'm pretty religious with how I store it though. WHen it's not in use, it sits in it's sleeve underneath my desk, and it only comes out when I plan on playing a game that I can't use the Mac for at the moment.

I doubt the color of the system is applied as paint

My 2 month old M17X R3 has the “soft touch(rubber) coating” on the chassis upper front left and right corners s peeling /rubbing/coming off exposing the glossy plastic underneath
My last experience with the resolution experts was poor = on site tech damaged my bottom cover on a previous service call and I have to jump through hoops to get it replaced
I really don't trustthe same people doing a chassis part replacement

Woah! It's been so long since I've logged onto NBR. Cant believe they're still making these
It's been about a year of ownership for me (wow time flies), and still no peeling anywhere. All's good here. jd63636, you should try getting it skinned to protect it. Might wanna try this one: Con-Tact 180 In. X 18 In. Black Faux Leather Drawer/Shelf Liner 15F-C6BA3-06 at The Home Depot. It's about $8 for a roll that'll last you forever, and you can wash and reapply over and over again.
Good luck! -

After a couple of weeks of having to relentlessly persue this issue with the resolution experts o_0 Alienware is sending a new lower body and an onsite tech to do the work
I would have been more comfortable doing this my self but at least if they make a mess of it then they will have to resolve it and I will be taking the day off so I can be there to observe the work being performed but the onsite tech.
