I am looking at virtually the same specs on the processor, video, memory, and most other parts and coming up with about $500 more for the Alienware.
What is the opinion around here? Is the Alienware worth the extra $$$$$ ?

You should post the specs you are talking about, it looks like to me that the XPS 17 uses a 555m, that card is less than half as a fast as a 580m, and still much slower than even a 560m which I think is the lowest spec card in an Alienware.

Looks like the XPS comes standard with a smaller battery, if you want the same 5 hours of battery life as a M17x you would need the upgraded battery.

I am sure there are many other difference, from the customizable lighting to the cooling system, etc.

I have an old dell m1730 Xps but I guess that's not the same thing your comparing. But if it is then I'd say the Xps m1730 actually has some things over the Alienware. The lid lighting effects look better and it has a little LCD display top right above the number pad which I think is good. It gives various info like time, processor usage and if games support various info.

sounds like your comparing an m17x-r3 to a dell xps 17.......the alienware has a faster GPU and is more gaming oriented.

It also has a large community backing and can be upgraded in the future in terms of GPU, CPU, etc...if you choose as long as its MXM 3.0b and the same CPU socket.

    I'd take alienware

I did compare with the 9 cell battery but I didn't realize then the 580m video card was that much faster then the 555m. Is it that much faster even though the 555m has 3gb memory as compared to the 580m with 2gb?
From the web site there is no way to compare the cooling differences.

    Thanks

The 555m is about half as quick as the 580m. Video memory does not reflect frame rates in any way unless you are running like 2k resolutions (>1200p). even if running high resolutions, the raw power of the 580m will out match the 555m in every case. The Alienware has dedicated cooling for GPU and CPU. They don't share any heatpipes.
