Anyone able to successfully get any remote working with the M17x??

prefereably the remotes that fit in the express card slot!

I know it should be able to work because right before I sold my old Microsoft MCE Remote Control i saw my M17x responding to it when the IR receiver that comes wit the remote wasnt plugged in!

so of course I realized the IR device embedded into the M17x works!! so i bought the following 2 remotes:

    1. Dell Wireless Travel Remote Inspiron XPS MR425
the following info is on the back:
    RC1761701/00
    3139 228 50791
    P/N: MR425

    CP04 40829 J 076817
    ---------
    2. HP 435743-001 407313-001 371694-001 EL623AA Remote
    info:
    RC1762302/00
    3139 228 50021
    HP SPS : 435743-001
    HP:HSTNN-PR07

    CP03 40652 D 040564 REVB

and have tried 3 drivers!! And nothing works!!

    1. Drivers from the M17x (Vista/Win 7) site: ITE IT8512 CIR Receiver R232656
    2. Drivers from the M17xR2 (Win 7) site: ITE IT8512 CIR Receiver R251081
    3. Drivers from 1730 (Vista) site provided by SAUCE in previous thread linked below: ITE IT8512 CIR Receiver R196531

added 2 links to other remote related threads:
    Media remote control for M17x?

    Infrared On the m17x?

    UPDATED WITH THE FIX!!!!!

As said before none of those drivers work.

I searched Windows update and found her. So look for the one named
"ITE Tech Inc. - Input - ITECIR Infrared Receiver (CE)"

When Its finished intall the remote will work immediately and it recognized the device as "Microsoft ehome Infrared Transeiver."

Glad to clear that up because I was wondering why this wasn't working for some people.

I use an interlink VP6600 Bluetooth remote and it works excellent. I don't think there is an RF port for the M17x to take in a signal from those remotes.

There is a Infrared next to the left speaker just to the right side if I'm not mistaken. I too would like a remote for the M17x systems. I think I saw an Alienware remote or media center one last time on dells website. Not sure if it would work with it or not though.

Anyone else know of a compatible remote control for the M17x systems???
    Cheers.

Nope no infrared port there as I have taken off my touchpad a few times never seen any ports there.

I listed a compatible bluetooth remote control Interlink vp6600

Well im sure this info isnt true that there isnt an IR port. As I said before the MCE remote DID WORK. Unfortunately i had to sell the remote so i cant check again. I guess I'm gonna have to just buy another of those.

    it was one of these
    [IMG]

and like i said the receiver that comes with it was not plugged in.

also on the M17x drivers list says: ITE IT8512 CIR Receiver

The " CIR " portion of the question refers to Consumer InfraRed. ENE is a low cost low power consumer chip manufacturer who manufacturers chips used in many different modern laptops. The InfraRed (IR) receiver is used to accept incoming commands from remote controll devices. Most modern laptops have a CIR receiver built in to allow a remote provided by a third party to work with the laptop as a mouse or other controll device during instances such as a presentation or multimedia browsing.

Both the R1 and R2 models have IR receivers on the front. This is the media center remote I use:

Newegg.com - Rosewill Windows 7 Certified Media Center Infrared Remote Control RRC-127

It comes with an IR reciever (USB) but you don't need it for the M17x. That being said, any media center remote -should- work as it's a standard instruction set. As long as you have a Win 7 version that comes with Media Center and you have a working IR port the remote should work right off the bat with no additional configuration, so before you go out and buy another remote I'd investigate the IR port driver situation more.

Or you can get a BT remote as suggested. Either way.

i tried the dell express card remote on my M15x and it does not work.
i checked the dell site they sell the dell MCE remote as supported for both m15x and m17x.
its the only one i could find as "officially" supported by m15x.

on the M15x the port is in the center at the front. it is not visible but its there, hidden behind the glossy strip of plastic, im sure its the same with the m17x

I use a ps3 controller over blue tooth paired by using Ben Barron | Windows applications portfolio

I've used it over several computers and with a little buton remapping find it quite nice.
I even have an oldish laptop running windows 7 for my parents booting straight into media center which they then navigate using the ps3 remote, I only wish the opitcal drive hadn't died.

thanks for the info guys. I dont use the bluetooth feature on my laptop, i hate the whole adding devices thing. It sounds inconvenient. do u have to put on bluetooth when puttin on the laptop?

Im considering that rosewill remote but i think i should go to the dude i sold the old remote to and make sure that works at least.

Yo Byshop can u tell me what drivers u are using. feel free to check the control panel's installed software. I just wanna make sure before i jump and buy.

You only have to pair the blue-tooth ps3 remote once, unless something goes wrong. And as fas as I know the blue tooth turns on every time with the laptop.
I have mine hooked up to a 23" monitor and use a blue-tooth dinovo keyboard.

guess what people, I just confirmed that my Dell Wireless Travel Remote Inspiron XPS MR425 WORKS!!!!
the following info is on the back:
    RC1761701/00
    3139 228 50791
    P/N: MR425

    CP04 40829 J 076817

BTW the way i found out it works is a long story but basically i have 2 remotes as i stated earlier and the Dell remote's battery cover for whatever did not sit flush on the remote. it fell just now and something told me to switch the covers. well, i pointed it at the laptop and the was workin. i switched the covers 2 or 3 times and it still works. no matter which cover is on. so the trick for me was to make sure the cover is fush. The hp remote still dont work. No matter the cover.

    The Drivers im using is:
    2. Drivers from the M17xR2 (Win 7) site: ITE IT8512 CIR Receiver R251081

i did a few installs and reinstalls and uninstalls so im not sure but in my control panel under installed programs it read as version 5.1.00000.1 . So feel free to hurry up and buy lol.

    Hi vic da god,

Im using M17x and having the same travel remote controller as same as you do(MR425), but I dont know how to get it work. Do I need to install any extra application or set up something to make it work ?!? I did try to buy a new batt. but nothing happened at all.

    Im using Windows 7 x64.

Looking forward to your reply. Thank you in advance.

Hey did u install the driver i listed?? If so it should work. Theres no extra apps to install just the right remote and driver. it was the 5.1.0000.1 driver. and make sure the batt cover is on flush. i believe i uninstalled the original CIR drivers then restarted then installed the New CIR Drivers. if u dont do so u may get an error during installation. dont forget to restart the M17x after installed.

Yeah i spent the last 5 minutes switchin batteries bwtweeen the one that works (DelL) and the HP. No matter what the HP doesnt work. I switch batteries, switch the covers and compared and checked the little metal thing that touches the batteriy inside the remote. it just dont work. If anyone can test it and get one workin let me know. But Even though the parts seem to be coming from the same factor, for whatever reason it doesnt work. Even the circuit boards have the same model #s.

    hi vic da god,

I did try so many times, its NOT working still. I did installed your listed driver(ver. 5.1.0.1 5/1/2009)

The remote cover is for sure on top of the battery.

As instructed, when you input the batt., the (+ sign) side should be upward where you can see it, but its hard to secure the batt. in that way than the other way(the + sign side downward), this is weird to me. Anyway, I tried with both ways, still NOT working. Im considering if my remote controller has broken?

Of course lol, the + and the words are facing up, the battery cover; and the bottom(-) is facing the circuitboard. I wish i could get this HP Remote working sine it has more buttons and looks better.

yeah thats the right info u have for the drivers. That problem u have is the same i had where the battery seems like it dont wanna stay down. when it should be seated correctly + up; - down. I also wasnt sure, but after playing with it so much now i can just drop the battery in and it will work.

Im actually holding the dell remote in my hand without the battery cover, pressing the battery into the housing with my finger while pressing volume +, - and the laptop is responding. Try that. If that dont work then try the other 2 drivers.

i'll even uninstall these drivers and clear my registry and try it witout the drivers and try the other drivers to see it it still works.

I get the same problem, the solution is when you are uninstalling the original driver, check the option that "delete the driver files"... something, do NOT restart the comp. then install drivers listed here. Good luck.

I could have sworn that I posted in this thread last week, yet even going to the list of my previous posts, it's not there.

Anyway... I'll try to recreate as much of it as I can remember. I use the interlink VP6600 bluetooth remote as a backup for when my wife is sitting within range of my URC-R6 ( Universal Remote Control) that I also use for the TV, DVD, HD-DVD, A/V receiver & htpc. Somewhere I have one of the official Microsoft Media Center remotes (like the one in the 5th post), but the kids probably have it in one of their rooms.

As to drivers for the IR sensor on the front, I never updated them on the M17x, yet the IR remotes have always worked fine on it. I was moving through the media center menu last night & unintentionally moved my wife's character in the game she was playing, so it's definitely still working on that system.

The M17x-R2 works fine too & has the following components listed under Human Interface Devices in device manager:
    ITECIR Infrared Receiver (EC)
    Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver

One thing that might be worth mentioning on the IR receiver drivers is that Windows Updates will have it listed to update too. I've never had good luck with Microsoft deciding what drivers they feel I should install, so I always refuse those, then hide them in Windows Updates & go check to see if there are actually driver updates for my hardware. You might be in a similar situation, which would probably require uninstalling both of the components mentioned above in safe mode, then reinstalling the latest Dell drivers. Good luck.

after uninstalling drivers i found i had remnants of another driver in my M17x.
    wasnt surprised.

    1. I uninstalled both the 5.1.0000 and another installed driver called ITECIR and its version was 1.0000. they were both in the unnstall window

    2. restarted PC.

    3. Tried the remote. It doesnt work. Check deivce manager and saw the unknown hardware. double checked uninstall folder to make sure nothing was there. perfect.
    4. Cleared my registry with tuneup utiities (i always do this. i dont think its necessary)

    5. Deleted the C:\dell\drivers\R251081 folder that existed from the previous install. This was the only folder in the dell folder sine i tend to delete folders after installation for no reason except i like a clean drive.

    6. Installed R251081. It prompts to restart.

    7. Restarted. And now my remote works.

P.S. In Uninstall window it shows up as ITECIR 1.00.000 (not the other one i gave before 5.1....) That is the ONLY ITE related driver in my uninstall window.
The hardware shows up in my device manager under Human Interface Devices as ITECIR Infrare Receiver.
The Driver Provider : ITE Tech Inc
    Driver Date : 5/1/2009
    Driver Version: 5.1.0.1
thats wierd considering it doesnt say that in the uninstall window. So i'm gonna hold onto the other drivers just in case, for any future clean install of Windows 7

    - My remote is a DELLP/N MR425.

    hope that solves your problems.

If you guys are still looking for an IR ExpressCard Remote that works with the M17x (R2), I found one:

Windows Vista Certified ExpressCard/54 Media Center MCE Remote Control and USB Infrared Receiver for Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows Vista Ultimate: XP-GTIR01 (Black, Certified for Windows Vista)

I bought this same remote for my W840Di Whitebook and it worked for that. I ordered it again for my M17x (it came today) and I can verify that ALL the controls work like it did with my old system. And even though it says Vista ready, it works fine on Windows 7 apparently (I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium). The package comes with a USB powered IR receiver too, but you don't need it at all.

This remote was hard for me to find back then, and is even harder to find now. I think xpcgear.com is the only site that still has them in stock.

Hey another update guys first of all ichime that remote looks nice, if even has a power button!!! I gotta get one of those, but ugh whatever. ...

Just bought a OCZ Agility 2 SSD Drive and Installed Win 7 Pro x64, and all the drivers to find out the drivers I thought fixed the Receiver dont work.

Tried aallllllll the 3 drivers i mentioned and none worked. Installed, Uninstalled, cleared temp, cleaned Registry, rebooted, and all that. So They DONT WORK!!

Then I searched Windows update and found her.

This seems to be the thread to ask. There have been a lot of hit and misses out there with remotes working with the M17x. I only have two remotes: one for my PS2 and a Cox universal remote that controls anything else. How would I be able to check if either of these could control Windows Media Player? I know the CIR is installed at both ITECIR and MS eHome IR Reciever are installed in Device Manager, but where do I go from here?

Here's another express card remote from Dell - looks almost the same as the MR425 except its black and has some additional buttons/features. Im not sure if its the newest version of the MR425 but i would imagine so given it now has an on/off button etc etc....

Might get one of these myself as I prefer it in the black. EDIT: I see that this is the one that SAUCE is using from his post earlier - nice to know that it works and has all he "extra" buttons too!

Dell Express Card Remote Control NU851 + Battery. on eBay (end time 01-Apr-11 18:27:00 BST)

What d'ya reckon? - think it will work with the ITE driver that I have installed? - or is there a specific version of these express card remotes that will only work on the M17x R2??? - dont wanna go and buy one only to find out it doesnt work! - there seems to be lots of different ones available including PU851 , PU853 , PU576 etc

I talked to a Dell chat rep (maybe foolish idea lol) who said that the PU576 was compatable...she hadnt heard of the MR425!!!

steve: "Well, I hope you can help out. Im in the UK and was looking for some compatability information"
steve: "Its regarding a Dell Travel Remote - expresscard"
steve: "I would like to know which one is compatable with my Alienware laptop"
Agent (Grace_B): "I am glad that you have chatted in. I'll try my best to assist you on that."
steve: "Great. Would appreciate that Grace"
Agent (Grace_B): "For me to be able to assist you, I will need to ask you a few question. Will that be alright?"
Agent (Grace_B): "What is the model of your laptop?"
    steve: "Sure, go for it."
    steve: "M17x R2"
Agent (Grace_B): "Steve, thank you for patiently waiting."
    steve: "No problem"
Agent (Grace_B): "for the M17xr2, we do not have a dell travel remote available."
steve: "Can you tell me if ANY travel remote will work?"
steve: "I see several available and my system DOES have a CIR device"
Agent (Grace_B): "We have this one from Canada but I am not sure if its available in UK."
    Agent (Grace_B) sends page: "http://accessories.dell.com/sna/products/Accessories/productdetail.aspx?c=ca&l=en&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&sku=412-1034&baynote_bnrank=1&baynote_irrank=0&~ck=baynoteSearch";
steve: "thats what im looking at now Grace....will it work with my M17X?"
    Agent (Grace_B): "Yes."
steve: "I have ITE CIR device drivers but obvioulsy no remote"
steve: "Great. Also, I have seen a few other remotes...they have part numbers NU851 and NU853.....are these the same?"
Agent (Grace_B): "This can work compatibly with the M17xr2"
steve: "Will ANY Dell Travel Remote work with my system?"
steve: "There seem to be alot of different versions - I just want to be sure I get the correct one."
Agent (Grace_B): "Manufacturer Part# PU576 can work for your system but NU851 and NU853 will not work."
Agent (Grace_B): "Not all travel remote will work."
    steve: "what about MR425"
Agent (Grace_B): "I apologize but I cannot see the MR425"
steve: "Thats ok...i got it off a forum, may be old"
Agent (Grace_B): "Will there be anything else?"
steve: "So the PU576 is not available in the UK?"
steve: "but it would DEFINELTY work?"
Agent (Grace_B): "Yes, that is correct."
steve: "Ok....thanks for your help Grace"
Agent (Grace_B): "Was I able to address all of your concerns in this chat session?

    Well, got my remote today.

It took ALOT of fiddling about with drivers and instaling and uninstalling various ones.

I had the recommended R2 drivers for this device installed (as of today, was the latest version for ITE CIR according to my service tag) and I also had the windows update for the ITE aswell.

I thought it would just work like butter off a hot knife - nope! :(

Tried various drivers and long story short, ended up uninstalling the Dell recommened driver for ITE from my system, uninstalled the Microsoft Ehome stuff too (manually) - didnt shut down or restart - ran ccleaner for registry.

I also removed the driver folder from Dell drivers folder on my c:drive. Total clean up.

I then installed the driver recommended by SAUCE on tis thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/471528-infrared-m17x.html post #7.

Restarted after install and bingo. All working fine. All buttons working fine too. Thanks SAUCE for posting which driver you had used. I may have not had the same travel remote as you as mine was the MR425 but it has worked a treat!

Now I can relax in true couch potato fashion :D

No worries matey. If it helps someone else out who wants a working remote, its all gravy, isnt it? ;)

Stashes away nicely too in the expresscard slot - funny how such small things put a big smile on ya face eh? LOL

Woulndt you think that Dell would get this driver issue sorted for the M17x? - I mean, c'mon....its equipped with an IR device and Dell make travel remotes....Dell..c'mon, get a driver up on support that actually WORKS for our systems with these devices!

I'm having the same problems with my remote. It came with my Hauppage 950q tv tuner and works great with it. But getting it to work without the usb tuner has been non existent. The remote's a DSR-0112 and when the IR program is running, it controls everything perfectly. But when I manually try to start the IR program it says it fails to initialize infrared remote hardware. Is there a way to change the program settings to have it use the ITECIR instead of the IR reciever on the 950q?

Bumping this thread with an update: I've reinstalled the stock ITECIR drivers and still nothing. Its worth noting that in the ITECIR folder in my program files it shows a rescan application and a 'remote' icon. If the IR is working properly then shouldn't it have an icon in the notifications bar like Hauppage's IR would? Or is there another program I need to download from ITE Tech that translates the IR signals from the remote and send the commands to windows?
