I just did a fresh Windows install to correct some issues i was having but then i noticed that my computer was using 2 displays when i have nothing connected to it.

This is very annoying and i dont know how to fix it, using the Windows + P buttons says its on extended but when i try any other options i just get a black screen and have to return to extended and windows is running in "Extended Desktop" mode on but turning it off to show only 1 desktop on 1 screen gives a black screen no matter what screen side i choose.

In device manager it says i have 2 Generic PnP Monitor with one located on the AMD HD 6970m and other on the Intel HD Graphics (integrated graphics card).

My guess is that i am missing some kind of screen driver? I don't think it can be faulty driver installation because i already installed windows and updated the drivers from dell's site twice.

I uploaded a pic from my device manager to show it

My R2 does the same thing, and as far as I can tell, Crossfire is disabled (for some unexplainable reason it automatically unchecks) and since there's two GPUs it seems to think there's two monitors. If I try to re-enable Crossfire without having removed the second monitor the computer crashes and restarts. I really don't know what the problem is, but I got my R2 before the whole vBIOS flashing thing and I haven't even touched it because it's been too much of a pain to figure out what I need to do now.

I also had this problem. This is the way I solved it:

This issue is caused when you are not in Crossfire mode and you put the laptop into Sleep/Hybernate. In my case I was also messing around with display profiles to switch from my laptop monitor to the destop monitor and back again.
To solve this I had to get rid of all my desktop profiles, and get it back into crossfire mode. I also needed to have a second monitor around and pluged in to be able to have a screen being displayed when not in crossfire mode. A fresh install of the driver (wipe clean and reinstall), WITHOUT a monitor plugged in, eventually solved my problem. But from then on I did not put the computer to sleep/hybernate without crossfire on.

    Hope that helps.

same here, when i connect external lcd via hdmi, laptop screen sometimes goes black, and external tv stays black as well with (no signal) displayed, i have to reboot, .........and finally after some tweaks i am able to duplicate screens as normal.
But why the hell i cannot set the drivers so when i plug external lcd, it will duplicate screen 1, and when i unplug hdmi, it will just disable it - is it very hard to do this AMD -LOL

It is not always unique to AMD. Nvida cards with SLI in my m9750 have the same behavior. The problem lies with the second MXM card. The OS cant always tell that it is a slave card and, as such, has no ports of its own to output with. Since both cards' circutry is the same, how is the OS to really know what to do? Since SLI/Crossfire laptops are such a miniscule minority, the problem has been tollerated by both users and manufacturers.

sorry flingin, was still on netoxr2000's problem. Yeah, I hear you on the plugging in and out of external monitors, but my observation still stands. No matter what the settup (single or dual card) or the maker (AMD or nVidia) HDMI and other video cables are just not hot-swapable.

thanks for reply but that's not my case, i dont have crossfire. I don't know why after the fresh install it just popped that 2 screens are connected when i installed the video drivers and im sure i dont have any hdmi/vga adapters connected.

i aslo tried that and got a black screen, but i can't manage to display my computer on a external tv...

sorry i couldnt help more. That is very strange behavior for one single video card. Since I have a R2 I dont have any Intel chips to conflict with the AMD card. I have to believe there is a driver conflict somewhere on the Intel side, but I couldnt tell you what it is.

My personal advice is to just disable the Intel chip until you can figure out where the problem lies. it isnt saving you power with the configuration it is in now, and then you can have more felxability managing your desktop on just the AMD card.

    Good Luck!
