So I did a search and did not come up with anything. My question is how do you do a transfer of files via ESATA cable I hooked both computers up and nothing? Am I missing something or does it not work that way?

    No that will never work.

You will need a crossover lan cable, or a firewire cable to do that. Or just do it over a standard network with a modem/switch.

I remember back in the day you could do it via the serial port but those went out of style a decade ago. Like Ash said, you're stuck doing it through firewire, crossover cable (you can mod a regular cat5 cable into one) or a network hub.

USB comp to comp cable is 480Mbit/s vs. Lan cable at 100Mbit/s.

Unless both ends are gigabit ports (likely) and then he will get 1000mbit/s, or around as fast as his HDD's can go. (acconting for write speed cap on the receiving drive).

    OK, next thing.

On the computer you want the files FROM:

Every folder that has stuff you want on the other machine (you cant copy programs, only files), right click it and click share with -> homegroup read/write.

Then, on the computer you want the files to be sent TO, browse to your homegroup and you will see them there.

Never, ever, trust those guys. Just because they work there doesn't mean they know squat. I had a lady at the post office last week tell me I couldn't mail to AK because AK wasn't a state and I'd have to fix my address first.

They'll tell you whatever you want to hear to get an extra sale. Always do your own research first.
